Problem with shipping serialized parts

Thanks for that very clear answer. It is not what I wanted to hear. I think our best idea so far to work around this is to sell the serialized component part as a separate item on the order. Although we sell the component as part of the final product, we could logically separate the two.

Well, that sounds like 2 different things really. If the end product you're shipping is what the customer is returning and it's not serial number tracked, then that makes for a difficult RMA return because Vantage has difficulty handling a component of a part return since it's not explicitly on the order or job as something being sold/shipped.

Secondly, you're running into Vantage 8's limitation with serial numbers going into a job. In 8, when it's issued on the job, that's all the farther it's going to track it, it's in WIP and will forever stay there.

Version 9 handles it much better IF you have components and the actual part on the job serialized, then it forces you to match the lower level material to the upper level job serial number (they can be the same serial number - just different PN's). In that way, we can bring up a shipped SN and look at it and see what lower level sn's were contributed to make that.

But alas, with your version 8, could you make the top level parts serial tracked as well and give them the same serial number of the component that's issued. That way you know the serial number of the component because it's the same as the parent. Of course if you have multiple components with SN's that's a wrinkle also you'd still only be able to RMA that parent part.

If not then I'm not sure what you could do, unless someone here has implemented something more intricate? We had much the same problem and manually tracked what lower level SN's went into upper level SN's but our top levels always had a SN, never the other way around like you have.

Some of our products use serialized parts. We issue the serialized part to the job. The part tracker shows "WIP" as the status for the serial number. After the job is complete, we ship the job to the customer. The job shows complete, and the item is shipped, but the serial number status still shows "WIP", not "SHIPPED". This is becoming a problem, because we are unable to RMA the item we shipped to the customer. Thoughts or ideas? Have we done something wrong procedurally along the way?

I'm guessing this is in Vantage 8 correct since Epicor 9 handles upper/lower level serial tracking better.

You are correct on your guesses. The job creates a new, different part number than the serialized component part. The new part is not serial number controlled.
