Well, kind of. By the time we started a call with them, the Task Agent was
completely locked up and could not be started or stopped. So they had us
restart the main appserver, which did not resolve the issue. Then they had
us restart the application server and the database server.
This got us going again in the same way as me stopping and restarting the
task agent did � in 10 minutes we were stuck again. The next time we
stopped and started again seemed to hold.
However, this leaves us in the position of not knowing why this happened,
and how to avoid it in the future. 3 hours of downtime in a distribution
environment the week of Cyber Monday isn�t good.
I really appreciate all the ideas we got from this group!

Hmm have you checked your connectivity between the machines? What does
your ping look like / latency etc?
ping -t YOURSQLSERVER
Also make sure that the date / time on both matches the AD server
