Program Takes Forever to Launch

Actually you might have to go one step further. I had this problem with two
same model notebooks on the same connection but with two different network
cards. In the properties of the card there is an Advanced tab and under
that is a bunch of things I usually ignore, but there is a Line Mode that
defaults to AutoDetect. For some reason the one card wasn't autodetectiong
the right mode so I had to set it manually to Full-Duplex or Half-Duplex
depending on the Hub or the Switch or the time of day (I'm not sure about
the last one). That's when I learned there was 2 kinds of Hubs. Also in
that Tab is line speed and the default is autodetect. You might want to
check that also.

Seeing as a couple of others are having similar problems to what we had,
maybe it would be helpful if I explained further. The actual problem was
that one of our two switches was detecting our hubs as full duplex devices
(there are such a thing as full duplex hubs, but ours are not). All of our
network equipment is SMC, so I'm not sure why the switch could not detect
the hubs properly. In any case, plugging the hubs into the second switch,
where they were rightfully detected as half duplex, was what ended up
solving the problem.

We are users of Vantage version 4.00.904. On a few of our
workstations it takes a good 5-10 minutes to load/launch the
program. These machines are in good condition (PIII 450's).
Sometimes progress even stops responding and users are forced to end
task. No error message is given, it basically just times out.
Again, this is on multiple machines which are adequately equipped,
however doesn't happen on all of our machines.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Chuck, if anyone responds off-line to this, can you fwd to me. I am in the
same predicament Workstations just sit...splash screen will ultimately
disappear for a short time and then eventually Vantage will load. I have
checked everything from hardware to viruses to any unique utilities that
user's have been using. Processor utilization is not an issue nor is
memory, either on the workstation or the server. Would love to hear
feedback on this.

I had a similar sounding problem on a notebook PC that was rather sluggish
any way. Norton AV was running on it and set to scan all files. Vantage
took 8 minutes to start. Reducing it to scan programs only, 45
seconds. Turning it off altogether, 15 seconds.

-Wayne
Wayne,

Tried that with NO luck. Like I said, all of our machines run Norton
AV and are set to scan all files. Its only 2 or 3 machines tops that
are the ones that experience the problem. On those 2-3, I've tried
disabling norton completely with absolutely no luck. Any additional
suggestions??

Check for other common traits these slow machines have. Are they located on
the same area of the network, for example? We just cut our Vantage load
times from 60s to 10s by moving the network hubs to which our Vantage
stations are connected to a different switch on the network.

Also try taking a machine that loads quickly and hook it up to the
connection of one of the slow machines and vice-versa. This will at least
tell you if the problem is related to the machine or the network.

Brian
Brian,

After checking the HUBS out and swapping them, we determined the
problem was actually the hub. Switching to a 3COM hub from a netgear
improved the speed performance GREATLY!

Thank you all for your help!

We have had the same problem here, but it was our switch. have had 2 of
them go bad. We use allied telesyn equipment and have not had a problem
until the last 2 months. I will check our hubs as well, as I am still
experiencing similar issues as Brian

Chuck,

What speed is your switch? Is it 10 megabit or 100 megabit?
