Raid 1 / raid 10

The Intel PCIe is designed to be software raided. Each 200gb has a separate Enterprise grade controller, the drives have 7 petabytes of endurance for 400 gb model of full write @8k. We take a snapshot of the database each hour backed up to the SAN.

Eventually we will build a SSD SAN with 10 gig connection for the database, unfortunately having one dedicated server, there is automatic failover like we have with our other virtualized servers on the SAN.

I'm doing some shopping for new servers. I need a new Email server now and,

I'm far from an expert on hardware, but I've done my research and I wanted
to bounce it off the group. I'm anxious to hear your thoughts.

For both of my severs (Email and ERP), I'm considering SSD's. I think the
technology is mature enough to start considering and relying upon SSD's
(thoughts?). Does anyone have any success or horror stories to share? To
me, a solid-state-device is inherently less prone to crashes because there
are no moving parts. But they are more expensive than hard drives, so that
may be a concern.

I know RAID 10 is basically two sets of RAID 1 models. I like the mirroring
aspect and hard drives are cheap enough now to warrant the "waste of space"
in a RAID 1 configuration.

I'm thinking RAID 1 will be sufficient for email but I'm wondering if I
should go RAID 10 on the ERP server because I've read that its I/O is
slightly faster.

I want absolute redundancy and will also get dual power supplies.

RAM is an easy choice, nothing less than 16GB.

What also about OS? Windows Server 2008 is completely compatible with
Vantage 8.03.xxx, right? (yes, once I get the hardware in place, we will be
upgrading to E9.) :-)

Any other thoughts?

TIA for your input!

Admittedly this is worst case info, but I was looking at specs for server drives just today and was shocked at the numbers:

Drive Write endurance specifications for 6G SAS SSD Devices
..........Lifetime Writes Estimated Life
200GB MLC Up to 517TB...... 7.5 months

now, if you have a 20 Gb db does that increase the lifespan by a factor of almost 10? As nand cells are used up does the data shift to other cells?

Just wondering......

Most of the new SSD's have a much longer life expectancy we've been running
our Epicor on SSD's for 2 years and are yet to replace a drive. Raid 10

Vic for your email go with Google Apps trust me its cheap, and way less
hassle.

You definitively want RAID 10 for your Epicor

Go 64 bit, obviously you can utilize much more ram that way..and unless you spent all your money on those ssd's... get at least 32gb or more of ram as cheap as it is comparably you won't be sorry.

Also, newer SSDs carry more storage than they are rated for. I.E. a 200GB
drive has 250GB of storage on it. As cells go bad the drive will stop using
them and replace them with a 'spare' cell. Combine this with write-leveling
and TRIM support in modern operating systems and you should see MUCH longer
life.

Also, make sure you disable the defrag and such that is auto enabled in
modern versions of Windows.

Also, for what it's worth we've seen no difference in drive life between
the enterprise and the consumer level drives. As Jose mentioned, we've been
running our Epicor on an SSD RAID10 for 2 years with no failed drives.
We're using regular old OCZ drives. You can get good 250gb drives for just
under a dollar a GB anymore which is pretty comparable to what you'd pay
for modern SAS drives anyway.

We have a found the best performance from Intels new PCIe SSD 910. The 400gb comes with two 200gb modules and the 800gb comes with four 200gb modules, there is no speed improvment with stripe RAIDing them, so we have them mirrored.

Are you actually running hardware RAID with a PCIe drive? Is it even
possible to run hardware raid on PCIe drives?

This is my one major apprehension in the recommendation of PCIe drives for a
customer installation, lack of simple redundancy.
