Re-indexing Database in Vantage 8

Missi,

We too are on Vantage version 8 and we experience daily app server
issues. Epicor has us forwarding our log files to them after each issue.
We have yet to resolve the problem.

Tom

Hi, Charles,

The IT director is going to check some more on whether or not the
memory might be the issue, but said he's already looked into that and
doesn't believe that is causing all the problems.

Epicor helped us "tweak" some settings last night, so we'll see what
happens today!

Thanks for the idea!

Missi

Does anyone reindex their database on Vantage 8.00 on a regular
basis? If so, does this help with the speed and performance issue?

We have been struggling since our implementation on 9/1 on the
performance/speed/lock up issue. Epicor has had us try some different
things and has looked at a couple different issues, but nothing so far
has really helped. We are currently locking up and having to restart
the apps server and DB at least daily. We have 40 users on the system.

It has been determined that our hardware isn't the issue- the server
is much bigger than what was even needed. So, it seems to be either
disk contention or a data issue. We are looking for user info on the
reindexing of the data to see if that might be part of the problem.

Any info would be appreciated.

Alot of times flakey memory will cause a system to behave much like yours

Yeah, I would agree with Charles if your server isn't equipped with
Registered ECC memory, I would take a serious look there.

Hi Missi,

Just a suggestion - if your server has more memory than is being currently
used (task manager can display the memory usage) and the memory installed is
done in multiple "sticks" - then remove some (it might hurt performance -
but since it has been unstable and crashing anyway.....). So if you have
4gb of ram using 8 sticks (512mb each) - take 4 sticks out.

Also, be sure to check the memory is all the same type and speed. Mixed
memory can cause issues as well.

Also check for overheating !!!

Not knowing your server - remove as many "unnecessary" things as possible -
sound cards, modems, printers - any hardware that isn't being used. And
software - antivirus in the past was not recommended by Epicor to be running
on the Vantage server (might be different with 8), your Vantage server
should be just that - not file and print or email or serving webpages.

We had a server that would crash during backup - never at any other time.
We replaced the tape drive, the hard drives, the controllers. It always
died while backing up the same folder. We moved the folder to another
server on the premise that perhaps there was file corruption that was
confusing the hardware - still died during backup. Finally, we were left
with "what's left?" We had more than enough memory installed in the box and
took some out - problem solved.

Good Luck,

Charles
