John
I'm running Vantage 4.0. My database was crashing weekly. Sometimes
actually rebooting the Vantage server. On the advice from Virginia Johnson
at Epicor I applied the patch to get it to ver 90B44. It took less than ten
minutes to apply. I did it at lunchtime. This cured a memory leak. I also
made the promsgs in the Progress folder Read Only so more than one user
could attach to it at one time. Since then my database has been staying up
for 30 day stints.
As far as your users. You can use ProMon to chop their connections or just
shut down the database. The results at the client are the same. The user
gets three error messages and has to hit the space bar. Then they can
reattach. If your crashing all the time your users are probably well versed
at this. Make a company announcement when shutting down the DB tell them it
will be down for twenty minutes when you need ten because they are going to
start hitting it while it is coming up. I have 81 users including 9 data
collection stations in three building. If you have Citrix or Terminal Server
connections as I have from my farthest building make sure you kill all the
terminal server connections while you have the database down.
Good Luck

Subject: [Vantage] reboot of Vantage Server
Hi all,
We have been running into problems lately which are solved
by rebooting the server.
How often due you reboot?
How do you insure that everyone is out before the reboot?
Thanks,
John Mansfield
