Report Builder field

Hello!

I am trying to edit a packing slip in report builder. I want to change
the leading text string to: 2S, but it doesn't like the numerical '2' in
the text string. Is there some setting I need to change for it to
accept the '2'?

We are wanting a 'bar code' font, as well. Do you know where I can get
that font?

We are on Vantage 6.1.

Thank you,
Tamara

I'd say that would probably cover you pretty well.

I assume the 4 SSD are for the DB and the other 2 drives are for the OS?

Which SSD drives are you planing on using? The dell drives are overpriced but the PERC controllers have been locked to stop usage of 3rd part hard drives.

Is that a very recent development? We are currently using non-Dell drives on
a Perc controller. The server is about a year old.

I am not sure I understand the use of SS drives. What are they going to be used for? They are slower than the SCSI drives. What size is your database and how many users? Personally I would use the 146gb 15K rpm drives in a raid 10 to store the database and two of the same drives mirrored for the boot drives as well as the Vantage and Openedge program folders. If you have more than 30 users I would suggest dual quadcore zeon processors in order to handle the extra processes like print jobs that occur. Be sure to get a dual channel controller as well, otherwise you lose the advantage of separate raid sets.

If you have to run MRP that is another consideration. There the speed of your processors plays a large roll in how long it will take to run.

Which SSD drives are you planing on using? The dell drives are overpriced but the PERC controllers have been locked to stop usage of 3rd part hard drives.

This was the case for the new PERC H700/800 card. After I posted I had a quick look around to see if the situation has changed, which it has. As far as I can tell you need to upgrade the firmware of the PERC to A2 to unlock 3rd party drive support. The firmware was released 2-3~ months ago.

SSD's are massively faster for Random IO then SCSI. 4 Intel x25-e's will outperform 8 15k SAS drives at random I/O.

Andtech did a very good review on the Intel X25-E's for use in enterprise computing. In turned out that a real-world 20gb MySQL db performed better on one(1) ssd drive for the DB and one normal SAS drive for the log then eight (8) SAS 15k for the DB + 2 SAS for the log.

here is the article:

They are Dell, but I don't have any specs on them, just the part number.

I would advise you shop around for 3rd party SSD drives.

Intel's X25-E's are the best in the market, targeted at enterprise and are no where near as expensive as Dell's SSD but the current top capacity is 64GB.

Alternatively you could look at the OCZ vertex 2E drives. These are not specifically targeted at enterprise (they are MLC based) but are showing great performance in the random 4k area which is pivotal for SQL. These drives do come in 240GB flavors and will set you back £350~ a drive.

What RAID config are you thinking about for your SSD's? You may want to investigate not spending the money on the 1GB PERC. When its attached to SSD's I _think_ it just passes through the cache and goes directly to disk. The PERC controller, like all on the market ATM, will also not pass the TRIM command to the drives.

The SSD drives will be Raid 10. The OS drive will be a raid 1.

Thanks for the advice on 3rd party SSD drives, but I did get a substantial
discount on this setup and the server has a 4 hour mission critical warrenty.Â
If I went with 3rd party drives, they wouldn't be covered by this warrenty.

The controller is a H700. Here are the specs:
PCI-Express Gen2.0 support
6Gb/s SAS (SAS 2.0) host interface
Doubles throughput performance capability
Increased IOPS performance with Cut-Through IO & SSDs
Adds support for Self Encrypting Drives (SED)
Adds 512MB & 1GB Non-Volatile (NV) Cache to to PERC H700 & H800

Â
I would advise you shop around for 3rd party SSD drives.

Intel's X25-E's are the best in the market, targeted at enterprise and are no
where near as expensive as Dell's SSD but the current top capacity is 64GB.

Alternatively you could look at the OCZ vertex 2E drives. These are not
specifically targeted at enterprise (they are MLC based) but are showing great
performance in the random 4k area which is pivotal for SQL. These drives do come
in 240GB flavors and will set you back £350~ a drive.

What RAID config are you thinking about for your SSD's? You may want to
investigate not spending the money on the 1GB PERC. When its attached to SSD's I
_think_ it just passes through the cache and goes directly to disk. The PERC
controller, like all on the market ATM, will also not pass the TRIM command to
the drives.

Is 4 SSD's enough for the database in raid 10?

They are Dell, but I don't have any specs on them, just the part number.

Which SSD drives are you planing on using? The dell drives are overpriced
but
the PERC controllers have been locked to stop usage of 3rd part hard drives.

Why RAID 10 on SSD? Isn't striping to speed up access when using spindles?

If using SSD's, how would you set them up. We are going to be moving to 9.05
with about 50 users and 12 MES Stations.

4 drives are the min for raid 10. It would give me 200Gb of space and our
database is only 4Gb. I guess the question is "are 4 SSD drives better then 8
15K SCSI drives?".

They are Dell, but I don't have any specs on them, just the part number.

Which SSD drives are you planing on using? The dell drives are overpriced
but
the PERC controllers have been locked to stop usage of 3rd part hard drives.

There is still access time associated with SSD drives, so stripping with raid 10
should still improve their performance, although not as dramatically as with
spindles. That is why i am thinking 4 drives would be enough.

Why RAID 10 on SSD? Isn't striping to speed up access when using spindles?

But if its in the budget, more would be better? Or would it be that
insignificant of a difference to go to 6 drives?
