Report Builder with Sonoma & CE 9 comments

Wasn't here yeterday to join in this thread, but I have some thoughts.
I think the difference here may be that Linda (as are we) is using the
Report Application server that comes with Crystal Reports Pro v9. It
includes a "lite" version of the e-portal web page for deploying reports.
It sounds like Brian is using Crystal Enterprise which, I believe, has a
much beefier report server. Linda, on ours also if you use the Crystal
print button it opens Adobe regardless of what the defalt printer. I think
this "lite" version creates a pdf to view the report so that is your only
print option. If you use your browser's print button while viewing the
report you can select a printer but you get the Crystal heading printed on
the report.
Brian, I'm not familiar with CE but with my "lite" V9 Report App Server I
set up users with a shortcuts that display the report directly without them
having to go to the webpage and pick it from a list.

Linda,

I am not yet live with CE9, but this sounds like a printer problem.
When you hit print are you given the option of choosing a printer?
It sounds like maybe your default printer is Adobe PDF writer. You should
be able to change that to an actual printer.

Brian
From what I understand, Epicor will no longer support/offer report builder
when Sonoma is released. This leaves us with Crystal...which in my
experience cannot link as many tables as report builder can.

How is everyone preparing for this?

We plan to go to 6.0 as soon as one issue is cleared up. I plan to stay
there for at least two years. In conversations with Epicor reps I've
been told that they are attempting to find ways to do such things as.
Add Crystal reports to the menu, Set up VB button reports, and timed
(automated reports), (I am hoping that they also add Crystal Report
selections from a list in places like Purchase orders, Sales Orders,
Shipping, Receiving.). They have also said that you will still be able
to run existing RB reports to 7, we'll see. I will probably stay on 6
until I see the same functionality for Crystal OR an other engine. RB
is like the kids stripped down hot rod. Few frills, lots of speed.
Crystal is like dad's full power Caddy.

I received documentation (on the support web site -- "The Vantage World Newsroom ) from Vantage addressing this issue:

"After a great deal of research, Progress has elected to discontinue the devolvement environment for its Report Builder tool. With this change, users on the next version of Vantage/Sonoma will not be able to create new Report Builder reports, or modify existing reports. This includes incorporating Vantage upgrade schema changes to existing reports as well as managing filters.

We understand that many Vantage users depend heavily on Report Builder, and we are currently working with Progress to produce and upgrade methodology to bring Report Builder reports into Crystal Reports. We will keep you up-to-date on this project, along with the potential cost if you elect to utilize these services. ............"

Once again Epicor's hand is in our pocket. I am planning to wait a year or more to upgrade. I have way to much work on my plate right now to have to go through this!

This was not Epicor's decision - Report Builder is a Progress
tool...Progress has not made any significant changes in Report builder since
I first saw it in 1996. Epicor didn't get to pick. They are actively
seeking alternatives. I really believe that they were as upset as all of us
about losing Report Builder.

Meanwhile, I agree that the loss of Report Builder without an adequate
"quick and dirty" replacement is enough to keep me from moving on to Sonoma
for some time. However, I wouldn't sell the Business Dashboard (or whatever
the heck it is they are calling it) that is in 6.0 or 6.1 short. Since I
don't have 6.1 running, and it has been months since I saw it, I can't
elaborate, but it looked pretty good for gathering info. The first question
I asked was "Gee, this is cool, how much?" It's not a new module, comes
with the upgrade.

I have see work done in Sonoma to enhance the DashBoard/Activity Monitor to
not just list data but to also perform basic report builder type sorting,
grouping, totaling, etc... While I'm not sure about alias joins or linking
to image files, complex calculated fields or cross tab reports but there is
work being done that looks like a majority of our Report Builder Reports
could be replaced with the Dashboard type interface. Maybe the biggest
benefit would be to right click on these lists and open tracker or a data
entry screen. I think this approach is a huge improvement over basic report
builder and crystal type reports. I'm not sure how good the dashboard will
look though with my 700 report builder reports in it. Probably like the
dashboard in my car.

VBI (CorVu) perhaps? We are still getting to know it but three initial impressions...1. Very powerful 2. Very hard to learn (much more so than Crystal) 3. Very expensive. Also, as far as I can tell so far, not good for real-time reporting - it runs from datasets created overnight. I think though you can create your own dynamarts and report from them anytime but there could be performance hits. But all in all the power of it is very intriguing. Now if I can just get the OK to get training I might be able to do something useful with it.

Yesterday I attended a Crystal Reports user group were they introduced
Business Objects as the new partner / owner of Crystal Decisions. They also
presented the latest release of Crystal Reports & Crystal Enterprise version
10. The enhancements to both products over the currently Epicor supported
release of 8.5 is impressive. It is pretty obvious that this is product that
is actively being enhanced and developed , unlike report builder. I would
like to see Epicor put more effort into supporting the more current release
of Crystal Reports i.e 9.0 amd 10.0. I certainly sympathize with those of
you who have a heavy reliance on report builder reports. I think to
encourage Epicor to look at still another repot generation tool would
continue to divide their development resources between products.

It's Friday the 13th and I'm feeling luck Fire Away.

VBI (CorVu) perhaps? We are still getting to know it but three initial
impressions...1. Very powerful 2. Very hard to learn (much more so than
Crystal) 3. Very expensive. Also, as far as I can tell so far, not good for
real-time reporting - it runs from datasets created overnight. I think
though you can create your own dynamarts and report from them anytime but
there could be performance hits. But all in all the power of it is very
intriguing. Now if I can just get the OK to get training I might be able to
do something useful with it.

I understand that it wasn't their choice to get rid of Report Builder.
Doesn't mean that I can't be annoyed that they are going to charge me
for the fix (converting Report Builder to Crystal).

Cheryl:

This was not Epicor's decision - Report Builder is a Progress
tool...Progress has not made any significant changes in Report builder
since
I first saw it in 1996. Epicor didn't get to pick. They are actively
seeking alternatives. I really believe that they were as upset as all
of us
about losing Report Builder.

Meanwhile, I agree that the loss of Report Builder without an adequate
"quick and dirty" replacement is enough to keep me from moving on to
Sonoma
for some time. However, I wouldn't sell the Business Dashboard (or
whatever
the heck it is they are calling it) that is in 6.0 or 6.1 short. Since
I
don't have 6.1 running, and it has been months since I saw it, I can't
elaborate, but it looked pretty good for gathering info. The first
question
I asked was "Gee, this is cool, how much?" It's not a new module, comes
with the upgrade.

I received documentation (on the support web site -- "The Vantage World
Newsroom ) from Vantage addressing this issue:

"After a great deal of research, Progress has elected to discontinue the
devolvement environment for its Report Builder tool. With this change,
users on the next version of Vantage/Sonoma will not be able to create
new
Report Builder reports, or modify existing reports. This includes
incorporating Vantage upgrade schema changes to existing reports as well
as
managing filters.

We understand that many Vantage users depend heavily on Report Builder,
and
we are currently working with Progress to produce and upgrade
methodology to
bring Report Builder reports into Crystal Reports. We will keep you
up-to-date on this project, along with the potential cost if you elect
to
utilize these services. ............"

Once again Epicor's hand is in our pocket. I am planning to wait a year
or
more to upgrade. I have way to much work on my plate right now to have
to go
through this!

From what I understand, Epicor will no longer support/offer report
builder
when Sonoma is released. This leaves us with Crystal...which in my
experience cannot link as many tables as report builder can.

How is everyone preparing for this?

The programming staff at Epicor has gotta have reporting tools that they use
to read the database. Windows interface and all. I'm sure of that. They
need them to do their job. They could certainly repackage that for users...
or not.

No stinkin' training worked fine for RB (one of the real beauties of it) and there was no ROI pressure because there was no visible cost associated with it. CorVu's expense really caught our President's eye and he is all over me to be as fast with it as I am with RB. I could learn CorVu that well by absorption in perhaps 2-3 years but a little training would sure speed it up a lot (and preserve my employment too). Maybe only take a year. With or without Stiletto Pumps. In the mean time I am absorbing it by trial & success and getting a few useful reports out of it. Anyone using it know of any good books for it - like maybe "Corvu for Dummies"?

VBI (CorVu) perhaps? We are still getting to know it but three initial
impressions...1. Very powerful 2. Very hard to learn (much more so than
Crystal) 3. Very expensive. Also, as far as I can tell so far, not good
for real-time reporting - it runs from datasets created overnight. I
think though you can create your own dynamarts and report from them
anytime but there could be performance hits. But all in all the power
of it is very intriguing. Now if I can just get the OK to get training
I might be able to do something useful with it.

From what I understand, Epicor will no longer support/offer report
builder
when Sonoma is released. This leaves us with Crystal...which in my
experience cannot link as many tables as report builder can.

How is everyone preparing for this?

This will not provide everything that Report Builder does, but we use MS
Access for almost all of our reporting now and we absolutely love it.

The cost is transparent to us b/c we use access for so many other things
here that all office users have a seat of it anyway. It is fairly easy to
use and it also always for advanced reports and programming. In addition,
it is VERY user friendly for the end-users to run reports b/c you can set-up
nice front-end screens for them.

I know it will not be an easy or practical solution for everyone, but if you
have it, try it out - we love it.
You just need some training Cliff :-)

VBI (CorVu) perhaps? We are still getting to know it but three initial
impressions...1. Very powerful 2. Very hard to learn (much more so than
Crystal) 3. Very expensive. Also, as far as I can tell so far, not good
for real-time reporting - it runs from datasets created overnight. I
think though you can create your own dynamarts and report from them
anytime but there could be performance hits. But all in all the power
of it is very intriguing. Now if I can just get the OK to get training
I might be able to do something useful with it.

Actually, I had given some thought to using queries and Excel. What
holds me back is that we have a flock of spreadsheet junkies. They are
firmly convinced that THEIR spreadsheet design can compete with Vantage.
I don't want my users to be software designers, I would much rather have
them determine their data needs and run the same report all the time.

Subject: [Vantage] Report Builder with Sonoma

This will not provide everything that Report Builder does, but we use MS
Access for almost all of our reporting now and we absolutely love it.

The cost is transparent to us b/c we use access for so many other things
here that all office users have a seat of it anyway. It is fairly easy
to
use and it also always for advanced reports and programming. In
addition,
it is VERY user friendly for the end-users to run reports b/c you can
set-up
nice front-end screens for them.

I know it will not be an easy or practical solution for everyone, but if
you
have it, try it out - we love it.

Sarah,
are you connecting to the Progress DB with ODBC? How secure is it. Do
you
have your ODBC clients set up as read-only?

thanks,

Shirley

[Rick Gors]

Are you using the "queries" while wearing the stilettos?
