We have elastomers in our completed parts in inventory. For expediency to satisfy a customer need we at times pull a completed part as material for a new job where we are only changing that elastomer. That job only has the completed part and the replacement elastomer as material. What would be the process to reclaim those elastomers that have been removed? We can use them in another part of the same size or sell them as a replacement part on their own. We would like to return them to inventory and reclaim their cost from the part from inventory.
I can’t use salvage or return material directly since the job of the part from inventory is already closed.
I would create a job when these situations come up and issue the finished good and the new elastomer and before closing the job, return the old elastomer to stock using the Return Material. Other than that, there really is no other way than doing an inventory adjustment.
That is our current process but the finished good comes in as a whole and not its separate components. So the current elastomer is not available for Return Material.
Correct. That is why you have to issue the new one to the job and then you can return the old one. Unless you are serial tracking or lot tracking that part. Then you need to do some extra steps.
We do issue the new elastomer but it is a different part number than what is currently in the finished product. The finished product is SN tracked and the elastomers are lot tracked.
If it is a different part number, then you will have to salvage the part back to inventory. So, issue part X to the job and salvage part Y from the original part.
I must not be explaining correctly.
Finished product (FP8x10E4) was made using materials; S150, S250, Elas04, Elas01
The new job (FP8x10E5) has material FP8x10E4 and Elas05. Elas04 is to be replaced with Elas05. But FP8x10E4 is the material and Elas04 is not available in the list of materials to be returned.
Correct, it will not be available to return. That is why you will salvage Elas04 from Elas05. I would document the process and when it is to be used so anyone can go back and explain how this magical change in material happened.
At one point in the past I submitted a request to Epicor to allow for the swapping out of materials for RMAs or quality rejections. Basically issue FG and new part and allow to swap out old part with new part anywhere in the BOM. I don’t think that was ever created.
