RMA/Adjust Serialized Part - not on sales order

So we build drill rigs. These drill rigs are made of hundreds and hundreds of parts. All the small parts all roll up to one job that makes a “top-level” part number which is what is on the Sales Order and is shipped. This means the sales order has one part on it. Now, a couple months later after shipment, one of the serialized components on that drill rig fails. We go out, swap the component and bring the old one back. The old one is a serviceable part and can be repaired to new status.

How do I get this serialized part back into the system so it can be “reworked” and put back into inventory once repaired? I can’t RMA it since it was consumed on a lower level job, not shipped. I can’t seem to do a Quantity Adjustment on it either no matter what status I adjust it to in Serial number maintenance. I cant return it from job since that job was closed months ago.

HELP!

Yeah, it gets tough with lower level serial numbers.

One thing you could do is RMA the top level, disposition it to a job, return the part to inventory, and issue the new part with the new serial number. Then I would just do a shipment to get the top level out of the system. It’s a real pain, but it works.

yikes, I don’t think our finance dept will like that solution. That top level part has a cost of up to a million dollars while the subpart is only about a thousand. I think I’m going to adjust in a new serial number with the existing serial number dash RMA or something like that. This doesn’t seem like a crazy off the wall request, surprised there isnt a good solution.

Doing what I said does not have a financial impact, everything is just pass through.

Yes, there are a lot of people who have complained about not being able to easily alter serial numbers in the system. I believe there is an Idea out there to improve the functionality.
