The only way I have ever done it was to personalize the grid and then add that to a customization.

Hola Tracy, Go into dev mode, open the form, expand your column, save layouts, open the customization, slightly move any control (you can move it back), save customization Or worse case scenario, talk to your developer and have him explicitly set the column width.
