[semi-OT] MS Virtual PC 2007

Just this week I installed Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition on an
unused physical server.

2003 EE gives you the rights to run up to 4 virtual servers without any
additional cost.

I have been testing VMWare (Free version - Server 1.03) and it was
really simple to setup.

I'm not sure about VirtualPC but VMware has the ability to
export/import/clone a running physical pc/server to a virtual one.

I'm still in the learning mode and would like to hear from anyone that
has used both MS Virtual PC and VMWare and their opinons on which is
best.

I've used it, it does work.

A couple of things to note,

If you join the VPC to the domain, it will have to be as a uniquely
named computer.

When your clients log into the VPC and it is part of the domain it will
consume another CAL on your server so you will need to watch that.

When installing, you can allocate as much disk or memory to the VPC as
you want, also you can change the amounts anytime thereafter.

I use it for testing and it works great. DHCP will also bind a second IP
address to your NIC and writes to the DNS A record so network
performance is virtually identical.

I was wondering if anyone in the group has experience with Microsoft's
Virtual PC 2007 and would care to comment on how well it works or any
downside to trying it. I am considering it for isolating some lagacy
programs that run better with Win-98 or Win2K as well as isolating web
browsing to reduce risk from infectous web sites. Might also reduce some
conflicts people here experience between Access-95 and Vantage. Is there
a way to limit the memory available to a virtual machine?
Thanks,

Todd,

I have had great success in using Virtual PC 2004 and 2007 to isolate
some legacy and embedded apps. Some of the trade mags rank VPC below
the other applications out there like VMWare, but VPC has a feature
that I like, it's FREE!

I was able to deploy VPC onto a new XP machine and then install Win95
onto the virtual PC to run some 16-bit apps that were required to run
the plant machinery in my former company. I could then access the XP
machine via Remote Desktop and monitor what was happening on the VPC,
which was difficult to do previously with the old machine.

I would also store the Virtual Hard Drive (vhd) on a server, so that
I could quickly move the VPC to a new machine.

As far as memory goes, you can completely control how much you was to
allow it to have. I have successfully run 3 virtual PC's on a host
PC running XP-Pro. If you are planning on running multiple VPC's
simultaneously, I would suggest beefing up the RAM on your Host PC.

It is also a great tool for testing apps in a support role under
different OS's without having to dedicate a machine to it. I
currently have 2 Windows 2003 server installs, Ubuntu-704, Vista
Ultimate, Win95, and XP Home as virtual PC's on my laptop exactly for
this purpose.

Give it a try, I think you will like it.
