We made a change to the Serial # format in Part Maintenance taking the # of digits from 5 down to 4. However, when we goto then generate new Serial #'s with the newly changed format (4 digits), the format still shows 5 digits instead of the 4 we changed it to. We have done this kind of thing before and it has worked fine but not this time. Does anyone know what can cause this type change not to work?

We have 3 plants and have sometimes had our site serial number formats not agree with eachother. Did you check that your part detail sn format and site sn format agree?

Were there any transactions (that required serial numbers) to the part before the change?
If a part was originally not serialized, does enabling serialization affect prior part trans and/or QOH?
I’d like to think that you couldn’t enable serialization with a QOH. But would be required to issue it out, then issue it back in while applying S/N’s.
