Serial Number Tracking

Jeanne,

The problems I described have been fixed in version 5.0 per Tim Ligas
but unfortunately for us that our still on 4.0. Putting a "." is a
work-around that I should not have to do, and make it very confusing to
track parts. Especially when you can not ship a purchased part with a
serial number correctly.

I agree with the ability to track s/n's when the ship and are received
is a great feature and would be very helpful if it worked correctly in
4.0.

I am hoping to go to 5.0 very soon. Unfortunately, it keeps getting
delayed.

We are confused as to how to get this feature to work within Vantage. We
have tried it twice and have had to shut it off.

We want to track two types of serial numbers. First, for parts we purchase
and second, for parts we manufacture.

The purchased parts come from our parent company with a serial number
already assigned. We would like to get that serial number into our
inventory and then track it to our customers.

The manufactured parts are assigned a serial number before we ship it.
Currently, we keep a log book of those serial numbers. We would like
Vantage to be the log.

If anyone is using this feature, I would appreciate any insight either on or
off line.

Jim,

We are using the serial number feature and have been fairly successful. We are using Vantage V 4.

When our serialized purchased parts arrive, the number is entered when the part is received / passed through inspection. Then the individual parts are issued to the
appropriate job and the corresponding serial number is selected.

Our manufactured parts are assigned a serial number when we receive them to stock or ship from the job.

Each part can have it's own serial number format so your purchased numbers can be different than your manufactured numbers.

We have had some confusion when we credit a part from the job as it is not a one-step process.

Before any job closes we print a production detail report to double check that the correct serial numbers were issued.

If you would like to talk to me directly you may call me at 858.565.8400

Since I can not receive the amp. back into inventory this is a problem
for us.

Sorry for rambling - I hope you can understand this. I am curious if
anyone else is having these problems or are we doing something wrong
procedural wise.

Thanks,

You have concisely identified our exact problems. We ship spare parts to
customers and need to know the warranty period from our supplier as well. I
am sorry to say we are still on version 3.0, but hope to upgrade soon!

From the information you have provided, I guess my concerns have to wait
until we upgrade or do as Epicor has suggested.

Thanks for the help.

them. - I believe this has been fixed in 5.10.102

My other problem with the serial numbers is, you can not receive the
same number back into inventory. If my customer returns a unit that is
serialized I must change the serial number which is a possibly of
loosing its history. The other problem with returning s/n's to stock
is; we have a power supply assembly which includes three amplifiers.
We have had on several occassions to take an amplifier from an assembly,
which the inventory was already issued for, to send out to a customer.
Since I can not receive the amp. back into inventory this is a problem
for us.

Sorry for rambling - I hope you can understand this. I am curious if
anyone else is having these problems or are we doing something wrong
procedural wise.

Thanks,

I am in 5.0 and we have been using serial numbers since we were a 3.0 beta
site. For us it works very well, even when we have a part returned and we
ship against the same serial numbers.

The ability to track, when it was shipped, how often it has been returned,
etc. is a great feature and saves lots and lots of search time.

If I can be of assistance please email me off line.

Dina

You have concisely identified our exact problems. We ship spare parts to
customers and need to know the warranty period from our supplier as well. I
am sorry to say we are still on version 3.0, but hope to upgrade soon!

From the information you have provided, I guess my concerns have to wait
until we upgrade or do as Epicor has suggested.

Thanks for the help.

Jim,

We are also using the serial number feature and have NOT been
successful. We ship alot of purchased parts that we track serial
numbers. These parts are spare parts to our customers or replacement
parts. Version 4.0 has a bug that can not handle shipping purchased
parts from inventory and track s/n's. What happens is when your shipper
goes to ship the order, the s/n is not available for shipment. If they
go to add it, when the ship the part the get an error the number already
exist.

I was told as a solution by epicor - was to delete the s/n from the
master file, then readd it as time of shipment. To me this defeats the
purpose of tracking s/n's. If I delete it, I do not know when I
received the part from the vendor and when my warranty expires with
them. - I believe this has been fixed in 5.10.102

My other problem with the serial numbers is, you can not receive the
same number back into inventory. If my customer returns a unit that is
