Serial numbered parts - same mask - what validation should happen?

If two or more parts are enabled for tracking of serial numbers and all have the same validation type serial mask what would you expect Epicor to do?

Parts created get checked for uniqueness

question is; should all parts that share the same serial number mask type have enforced, unique serial numbers across the group

for example

part “a” serial mask “snmask”
part “b” serial mask “snmask”

job creates part “a” assign serial “123” - OK Accepted
job creates part “b” assign serial “123” - What should Epicor do here?? Accept or reject serial??

Accept.

If you want to enforce uniqueness, then you should have the SN Mask also generate the serial numbers.

S/N’s are only unique to the Part Number, regardless of the mask settings. You can parts A and B with the same SN’s.

I think I recall being able to include the P/N in the S/N, so you could have truly unique S/N’s like automotive VINs.
