Shop Buzzers

If the break times don't change, can you use the scheduler to play a
sound?

Instead of e-mailing the pc's at other buildings, if you create a small
VB app using Winsock.OCX control in UDP or TCP mode, you can just
broadcast/transmit a signal over the ethernet and have the listening
program play a wave file or activate a relay to trip a buzzer. This is
how I keep track of my DataCollection workstations. Every 15 minutes I
have them broadcast their status, if my pc doesn't receive a signal on
time from any of them, I am flagged with a popup message of "PC in
Trouble" and the computer name. I can then run out and see what the
issue is and get the workstation back up and running. This has been
working quite well for me and when operators are not entering data
correctly, they can't use the excuse the computer isn't working. (can't
tell you how many times I've found pc's unplugged or network cables
disconnected.)

"rare coincidental voice page will override the music input."....

The other option if you already have a tone buzzer in place, is to wire
a
10K resistor to a transistor. Connect the resistor to one of the LPT
port
pins and the other 2 transistor leads to the buzzer. Then all you do is
send a binary bit to turn on that LPT port pin number creating a +5v
which
will close the circuit of the transistor. 1-3 seconds later, send the
off
binary bit the LPT port to open the circuit.

I do this with our SPC data entry setups where we have multiple digital
gages on a jig and the data needs to be read into the SPC system in
order,
so when a operator goes to check a part, they'll load the piece into a
jig,
press one button, and the computer will turn on/off up to 16
connections/gages (with 2 LPT ports) in the order I define them. This
way
we never have a user entering data into the wrong fields of the SPC
system.
Works great.

I've been doing this for years. No 3rd party utility required really
except
a few freeware bits to make it easier. Basic scheme....sound card in
Vantage server with output (mini-jack to two wires) connected to paging
"music" input. At regularly scheduled times (using Scheduler on server)
a 3
second tone is played via the sound card and out to the paging system.
Only
drawback....rare coincidental voice page will override the music input.
Happens maybe 2-3 times a year so the "bell" does not sound. The real
advantage of sounding bell from the Vantage server is 100% coordination
so
shop employees don't "play the difference".

I have a write-up I've sent to a number of people which I will you send

Hi Ryan,

We have a set of scheduled tasks to play wave files
At the buzzer times. The wave files play through the paging system.
Works great, that is thanks to the idea sparked by this list.

Instead of e-mailing the pc's at other buildings, if you create a small VB app using Winsock.OCX control in UDP or TCP mode, you can just broadcast/transmit a signal over the ethernet and have the listening program play a wave file or activate a relay to trip a buzzer. Subject: RE: [Vantage] Shop Buzzers

I've been doing this for years. No 3rd party utility required really except
a few freeware bits to make it easier. Basic scheme....sound card in
Vantage server with output (mini-jack to two wires) connected to paging
"music" input. At regularly scheduled times (using Scheduler on server) a 3
second tone is played via the sound card and out to the paging system. Only
drawback....rare coincidental voice page will override the music input.
Happens maybe 2-3 times a year so the "bell" does not sound. The real
advantage of sounding bell from the Vantage server is 100% coordination so
shop employees don't "play the difference".

I have a write-up I've sent to a number of people which I will you send
off-list.

Subject: [Vantage] Shop Buzzers

I have been told that there is a third party utility that can integrate
my server w/ the paging system in order to sound shop buzzers for
breaks, lunch, end of day, etc. Does anybody know what this system is?

Thanks!
