Should I upgrade to Epicor 9 now?

We are in the midst of upgrading to E9 from Vista 4 (full implementation) Our decision was to go with E9 rather than V8 because of data migration and the fact that it typically is a "challenge" at best and we desire to do it only once. We utilized Epicor support extensively prior to the choice to show the E9 workings via webcast in "quote to cash" scenarios and the system seemed to be quite robust. That, coupled with the installation of E9 with the demo DB and operating it for several months has solidified for me that it was a good choice. We had V8 installed prior to with demo DB and found no difference in the stability of the system. Devil's in the details, however, and there is much we do not know as far as accuracy of reporting, etc. From what I've seen thus far on the user group problems look pretty typical and V8-like, ie bugs but nothing debilitating.

We are currently moving ahead in the financial configuration mode. Bear in mind that our setup is quite simple compared to the majority of those I have read about on the user group. We are a job shop with no BOM, no need for MRP, basic scheduling. I'm confident that E9 will work just fine for our needs so might suggest additional input from other robustos out there.

Good luck!

Mike

Currently, we are in the process of migrating from various legacy systems to Vantage 8.

We are only live using the accounts currently. We are running multi company and have 3 sets of accounts being maintained manually. (we are not live on intercompany trading yet.

We are not live on anything else as yet - that is still being tested.

Would it be easier to migrate to Epicor 9 now?

Long term it may save time ond money on testing and staff training?

I throw it open to the group. What are your thoughts?

Has anybody else migrated only a partially live system to Epicor 9?

All advice is welcome.
Depends on your timeline for going live. Switching mid-stream will
require more time, obviously.

Normally I would recommend that you stick with the 8.x platform because
9 is still so new. But since you're slowing inching into the cold
Vantage pool it may make sense for you to do as you say.

Me personally, I have no plans on entertaining the thought of ver 9 for
another 24 months. I've been a guinea pig before and it's not fun.

We are not live on anything else as yet - that is still being tested.

Has anybody else migrated only a partially live system to Epicor 9?

If you are going through the long tedious process of an ERP (re)implementation, you owe it to yourself to upgrade to the latest stable release at go live. I don't know if I would turn on E9 today but by the end of the year, most of the kinks should be patched up. The user interface for E9 isn't that different from V8 so that shouldn't be a big jump. However, there are significant business rules that are different as well as some db structure changes.

Thanks for the feedback

What affect would the different business rules have on a system with no customisation?

Currently we are are 8.03.805L which is one of the first versions after the rewrite. We have had two consultants tell us to upgrade to the newest 8.XXX version and not go to the 9 as of yet becasue it's very taxing on the computer system and there are still some bugs they are tring to get fixed.

I haven't delved into all the differences myself as of yet but it's my initial understanding that there are some differences in the financial areas and some of the transactions around job costing. Customization or not, you need to understand how the system is going transact. So there are some differences in the business logic and db structure between V8 and E9, you'll just need to investigate what they are and what the potential impact will be for your business and your implementation plan.
