I’m getting a late start. Life issues, tractor tiller and walk behind tiller broke, etc…
But anyway, who gardens and what do you have growing on?
Planted this chayote squash this morning by the pool fence.
Late start in the Northeast too. Cold rainy spring and a roof repair set us back. Heck it’s grey today and we’ve the wood stove going in June FFS.
Pepps, tomatos, greens, peas n onions in last week. More onions, cukes, carrots, herbs this weekend.
Plus helpin the boss in her flower gardens.
Hate roofing but came out ok. Gotta paint and reinstall gutters, spouts, n window boxes
Oooh that’s a nice canvas to work with. I’d show mine but still in cleanup mode.
I’m battling
eating my gardens since the dog died. Pretty sure my neighbor is feeding them as there’s a tame bunch hanging around. Open to suggestions.
Deer are delicious.
We live out in the woods and a ton of deer and other wildlife. To help keep the deer out we use cow panels to close the garden in and plant marigolds around the edges on the inside. You can try pie tins the flashing keeps the birds and deer away. these are from last year. We are just getting started this year.
Man, my stuff isn’t nearly so far along.. We are always behind, but this year seems like its more than usual. Hopefully we go long on the other end or I won’t be getting any ripe tomatoes, peppers, or winter squash..
Nothing worked except a Huge fence for me. I had to give up on gardening for several years until I had the time and gumption to make it, as they were destroying everything and eating all sorts of stuff ‘deer don’t eat’
Even after I stopped gardening, three years later they would come and eat regular weeds where my garden had been.. they are devils.
I need woodchips so bad – they make the garden look so much neater
thats where we’re at but havnt spent the effort to set it up. Thinking 6-8ft HD Poly fence is the only way. We’ve done liquid fence (aka salad dressing for deer) and 4-5 ft cattle panel and they just jump over it no prob. I do recommend the Orbit Yard Defender for areas where fence is not practical
(Orbit makes quality stuff - dont bother w knock offs)
but you gotta stay on top of it as they’ll figure it out eventually. pretty sure i get suprise-sprayed more ofter then the tame deer.
I’ve heard if you want to do a short fence you have to make it double layer and have the spacing right so they are scared of jumping and not being able to clear both as they don’t have super great depth perception. I also have heard they won’t jump if they can’t see whats on the other side (makes sense).
Get some of that green or orange plastic construction fence and put it on the outside of your fence. The plastic fencing moves so it spooks them and they won’t jump over the fence.
I just grow flowers and bushes in my yard. I use a product called “Animal Off” that has a cinnamon smell to it is available at Menards and sprinkle Milorganite all over the place. Yes I have to be pretty diligent on how often I use both of these but they do help to deter the deer. Something you could maybe try?? Marigolds have never helped in my yard. Good luck with whatever you try!!!
Yes, you need at least an 8 foot fence or a double fence for deer.
