I wouldn't spend too much time on Bochs in its current incarnation as it
is not a very efficient emulator for large operating systems:

http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=880536&forum_id=39591

I played around with it for a while, but kinda lost my steam when I
found out how inefficient it was (2.6 Ghz = 10 Mhz). I've not tried
plex86. VMWare does a great job of allowing you to run pretty much any
Intel based operating system on top of Windows or Linux. You can even
do wild stuff like run NetWare on top of Windows or Linux. If you want
to run Windows on Linux, you can also use VMWare, but Win4Lin is much
cheaper and, AFAIK, uses the same technology:

We are currently stuck on v4 of Vantage and v7 of Crystal reports for a
bunch of reasons that I'll skip here.

On the other hand time marches on for the rest of the software that we use
...

Translation: The last upgrade of Best "Abra" payroll uses Crystal V8.5. So
for the PC's that I install Abra on I have to install Crystal V8.5 because
they have eliminated their built in report writer and replaced it with
Crystal. Of course this trashes Vantage v4's ability to use Crystal due to
dll conflicts and lack of backwards compatibility.

Life is good ...

So ... I picked up a copy of VMWARE's workstation product. It allows me to
create a "Virtual" operating system partition inside of my desktop operating
system. You have your choice of operating systems for host and for guest.
In my case it was W2K inside of W2K. Used about 2 gig of local hard drive
space. What it did allow me to do was install W2K in the virtual operating
system with Crystal v7 and Vantage v4. As far as the network in concerned
the virtual pc just looks like -another- pc on the LAN.

Well thought out software for $ 299 a copy.

At any rate I thought I'd pass it on as a great way to have -2-(or more)
different PC configs "Live" on your PC at the same time. They also make an
equivalent product for subdividing servers if you want.

So Todd..
Does that mean that, you have to buy another operating System? Or are
you installing your legally owned software Twice, if so, how do you get
around the activation phase. I can see it now ..
(click .. hello Microsoft activation support. This is Todd I need to
reactivate my software. Tech: Sir.. that software has already been
installed. Todd: I know I installed it on this machine, I'm installing
it again. I have this great new progam I can run it twice on the same
machine. Tech: SIR, I'm sure our licencing SAYS ONCE PER MACHINE.
Please hold while I schedule you for terminiation..

I think you better get a hold of mikelowe-soft for advice.

Good guess Shirley.

As far as MS is concerned if you install W2k as the host and then have 10
copies installed in Virtual machines on the same PC you need 11 licenses to
be "Legal".

I won't print how I feel about that MS logic ...

Sorry about the double post...

What I meant to say was that there are some open source alternatives
to VMWare:

Bochs (http://bochs.sourceforge.net/)
plex86 (http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/plex86)

I downloaded Bochs the other day and haven't had much time to play
around with it, but it looks promising. It does clearly point out
that you need to have a valid license for whatever version of Windows
you are installing.

Have a great weekend,

Darryl Whitelock
