Splitting Hairs

You do not have to set up another part number. In the "Qty per Parent"
field of the operations where the washers are still whole, put 0.333. In
the final operation where the washers are cut into three pieces, put 1.0.
The jobs that get created will require 60 pieces be produced in the first
operations and 180 in the final operation.

I sure have said that I'm trying to not create any new part numbers because
of the number of BOM's that are affected. I was hoping that somebody that
did stamping or something similar had an easy solution that didn't involve
creating new part numbers.

Set the washer up as a subassembly to the wedge with a qty/parent of .3333.

Actually we are splitting washers but I couldn't resist. It's been one of
those days. Most of what we manufacture is one to one. These tapered
washers are an exception. We cut a job for 60 pieces made from bar stock.
At the final operation the tapered washers are split into three pieces, the
other operations are one to one. We end up with 180 pieces to go into
inventory.

How do I handle this? Assuming 1.0 linear inches of bar stock per washer,
a job for 60 pcs results in 60 washers which are split into 180 wedges. The
wedges are what is counted and inventoried.

Thanks to both of you. I thought of changing the qty/parent for the
material, but since it will be "wrong" I didn't want to do it unless I had
to. It takes the same linear inches to make one wedge as it does to make
three wedges. The amount of scrap steel is the only difference. The lathe
operators don't use the BOM to set the length anyway. I just don't like
having a qty/parent that I know is wrong.

I will have to educate the operators that the job is for wedges not rounds
or I will end up with three times as much as I want.
