I am in the process of upgrading from vantage 5.0 to 5.2. I've never done 2
versions at once before. We're doing this in a test environment now. My
question is, when we're ready to upgrade our live database in a few weeks,
how will I get it from 5.0 to 5.1 then to 5.2? Will I have to reinstall
everything?
Not sure if I understand the exact question but....
One the way from 4.0 to 5.2 our upgrades to 5.1 and 5.2 were pretty straight forard. I just did one after the other per the instructions with a pause to backup the database in between and also run a few reports (AR & AP agings and WIP/Cost). Once Live DB was at 5.2 I could move over all the converted RB and Crystal reports from the test server which was already 5.2. It really helped RB on the test server to run it standalone and map the same drive letter there as I eventually would have on the live server.

So, I guess, yes, I installed each upgrade on the test server (over a period of a couple weeks) then again on the live server (on one support weekend). Given the schema changes and conversions to the database along the way (and one more set for the 305 patch after you are at 5.20.208 from the CD) plus the need to convert the current data in the live DB I don't see any other way than to "reinstall" on the live server the 5.1, 5.2 and Patch 305 steps exactly as per the instructions for each.

We are installing the 'test' system on the actual server that will be our
vantage server when we go live (not on a test box). So, I'm upgrading my
database from a back-up right now. My plan is that when I'm ready to bring
it 'live', all I'll have to do is upgrade the live db (which will still be @
5.0) to 5.2 and we'd be good to go, since all the software will already be
installed and running on the box. But, since we're going through 2 versions
at once, I'm not sure how I'll get my 5.0 live db to 5.1 and then to 5.2
status when I'm ready to go live.

Sarah,

I'm in the middle of doing test upgrades from 3.0 to 5.2 on a test server. According to the installation notes, it is possible to have multiply versions installed on one server once you are in the 5.0 versions because you are installing into different folders, (etc. epic50, epic51, epic52). Just make sure use different drive letters for you mappings ending with the drive letter you want last. Keep an eye on which Admin service for Progress is running. When you are ready to upgrade your live database, follow the "Updating your existing database" procedures for each update (5.1 and 5.2). Make sure you apply the schema changes at each stage also.

I have been testing these upgrades for about month now going from 3.0 to 5.2 and I've had no problems but you might want to get a second opinion!!

Since copying the program changes to the new Epic51 and Epic52 Vantage folders is such a minor part of the process (compared to the work on the live DB) perdonally I woul feel safer following the instructions setp by step. It would not take very much longer and all the location references in the vtg and ini files would be correct. I'm not sure if the slight gain of just converting the db is worth the risk of introducing problems. Maybe I'm just chicken. As for the different db levels I ended up with complete Epicor, Epic50, Epic51 and Epic52 folder trees with each db for that level in its vantage\db folder. Took a fair bit of space to have all 4 from 4.0 to 5.2 (which I had available) but extras were deleted after all was correct.

Sarah,
I was lucky enough to have a seperate server to do this with, but it should
work on one also. I installed Ver5.1 on my test server, updated the
database, installed ver5.2 updated the database. When I was happy I had all
the bugs worked out we went live by using the test server to convert the
data to the 5.1 database. Then converted the 5.1 to 5.2 on the live
database.

If you do this all on one server make sure you have plenty of room, room for
4-5 full databases.
If you leave the software installed for 5.1 and 5.2, you should be able to
work the live database through just like you are testing, without installing
again.
Stopping the services for the version you don't want, and starting the
service for the one you want, works fairly well with this process. You do
have to convert the data to each version because of the schema changes.
Hope this helps.
Nancy

Hi Sarah,
We did the process similar to you, with only using the live server. In other words, we were running 3.0 live, but also had 4.0 and 5.0 on the live server during our testing phase. We then (later), went to 5.1 in the same way.

What you will want to do is:
1. Install 5.1 on your live server in it's own directory and with it's own mapped drive. (for instance Y:\Epic51\vantage and Y:\Epic51\progress).
2. Install 5.2 on your live server in it's own directory and with it's own mapped driver (for instance Z:\Epic52\vantage and Z:\Epic52\progress).

3. Now you can restore your 5.0 backup into your 5.1 database directory (ie. Y:\Epic51\vantage\db).
4. Once restored, you will need to run the 5.1 schema changes on that database using the Schema Changes Icon that was installed with 5.1 (in the Y:\epic51\vantage directory). This can be done from a client PC with Vantage 5.1 installed, or from the server. For even faster schema's, you can edit the "schema changes.vtg" by replacing the "Connection Options=" line with "-1". This runs the changes in "single user" mode, and you don't have to start up your Progess Explorer to run the schema changes. (You will need to start it for the next step however).
5. After schema changes are done (could be a couple hours, depending...), then start up Progress Explorer (if you haven't already) and log into Vantage to do the Database Conversions.
6. When the database conversion are finished (and any other instructions I may have forgotten), then you are ready to backup your 5.1 database and restore it to the Z:\epic52\vantage\db directory for the next step. (Alternately, you can sue the Procopy statement from a command prompt to do the same thing, but I recommend doing the backup/restore since you will want a backup copy anyway just to be safe.)

7. Now you will be follwing steps 4 through 6 above for your 5.2 database conversion.

Thank you all! This is exactly the type of information I was looking for,
and I'm glad to hear several of you have been down this route before!

A tip to speed up the schema changes and conversions of new release is to
install a client on the server it self and do the upgrade in single user
mode.
Single user mode does not mean being the only user in Vantage but starting
vantage with the -1 parameter for connectoptions in the vtg file instead
of -H vantageserver -S epic52 -N tcp.

We encountered a problem with Vantage 5.2 on clients with Windows 98SE (128
MB RAM).
When using the engineering workbench we like to start another vantage
program thru the mainmenu. Clicking on a menu item of the mainmenu starts
always the part maintenance. Clicking on part maintenance puts the focus on
the mainmenu, and clicking on mainmenu puts the focus on part maintenance.
In other instances Vantage freezes and we have to restart the workstation.
Using task manager to close Vantage solves the problem temporarly because
Vantage freezes immediately after logging in.
It looks like to be some memory leak. We do not encounter this problem on
Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

The problem is that we can not exactly reproduce it, but it occurs often.

Does someone else have this problem too? Has someone any suggestions?
Every year we seem to have a variance between the stock status report and
our G/L. Finally this year we found the cause of it. The stock status report
does not include non-nettable bins. We use non-nettable bins for the
inspection warehouse and for stock in the cars of the service engineers.

We might be the only ones to overlook the obvious. But just in case some
else is having the same problem and is wondering why they have to make gl
adjustments every year. Have look at your non-nettables.

Myself and others who have followed what Ronald suggested below know
what a significant difference this makes in reducing the time needed for
schema changes. Another benefit as I see it is that the database is down
and inaccessible to anyone else during the schema changes.
