Strange thing showing up?

Hi Bethany,

> products with multi-level BOMs.
Yes, 8 levels deep.
I think we end up with what you describe as multi-level MOMs too.
We had a mixture to, costing with NonStock seemed to cause a lot of issues.
So, we've converted the majority of parts to Stock too.
Average cost has thrown in a few curves too.

Also, we discovered the costed BOM and PDR use different calculations for eztimates.

Maybe we can compare notes offline sometime...

What is a 'phantom purge whip to variance'? We don't recall triggering this but we have 2 pages of these on some of our finished goods parts.
I used to get these when we first went live.
In our case, things were happening in the wrong order on jobs (or not happening at all).

Do you have access to EpicWeb?
There are several answer-books on the subject.

What do you mean the wrong order or not at all. Are these jobs that were scheduled but not completed or closed? What is the criteria?

Final mfg part number is received or shipped but things like this:
- a material was not issued
- an operations not completed
In our case we have multi level BOMs, lots of jobs feeding other jobs.
We had a combination of data entry mistakes and timing issues.
Some manual entry and sometimes triggered by backflush/autoreceive.

I was reading this thread and noticed you mentioned that your company has
products with multi-level BOMs. Is that really BOMs or were your referring
to MOMs? We have multi-level MOMs where the top-level part (ASM 0) is
non-stock and the assemblies/sub-assemblies can be a mixture of stock and
non-stock. We are working on a plan to convert everything to stock because
we have problems with the costing in our system. Our accounting team chose
to use FIFO prior to conversion and we have found out the hard way that if
the parts are not received into stock before shipping (shipped directly from
the job), then the FIFO layer for those parts is not created correctly.
Also,

Another problem we are experiencing is that our production planners do not
firm up jobs until they release them and that adds more confusion into the
system, especially in the purchasing area. We are looking at how MRP reacts
to whether a part is stock or non-stock and how job suggestions get made by
MRP. We are also looking at how raw materials are affected by not firming
the jobs since nearly all of our raw materials are stock items. We have
come a long way since our conversion to Epicor but it is still a long road
to go.

We have overcome the problem with what you are seeing in the WIP recapture.
What we do is make sure everything has been accounted for BEFORE shipping
the item. We allow our shipping department to "ship out" items without
checking the ship box. Our accounting department reviews every pack slip
and check the job using Job Closing to see exceptions before clicking the
ship box. If there are material missing or operations not complete, the job
is sent back to production to "fix", otherwise the costing is a mess.

We are a mixed-mode manufacturer and would like to use the non-stock flag
but we think the only way to straighten out our system completely and have
MRP work for us is to go to all stock items. Can any share their
experiences?
