[Technical] [additional info]

Malcolm,

It sounds like you'll need to tweak the startup.pf file since
the server hardware seems adequate.

We have a WinNT 4.0 (SP6a) server set up just for Vantage
(4.00.901). The only other programs running on this server are the
tape backup client (the tape drive is in our Novell server), the UPS
software, and Novell's NDS4NT.

In an effort to 'fine tune' this setup, I'm addressing a couple of
concerns:

1) When the users log into and out of Vantage, this makes an
entry in the Application Log on the server. Since management
doesn't want to pay for any more seats in Vantage than they have
to, our policy here is to log out of Vantage when you're not using it.
This is resulting in *many* entrys in the Application Log, to the
point that the log fills up in less than a week. Do other people have
this problem? Any suggestions on addressing this?

2) Probably like most of you, we have Vantage set up to launch
automatically when the server boots up (whether someone logs into
the console or not). For some reason, when the system comes up,
I'm seeing 7 entries of _mprosrv.exe in the Task Manager, and 6
entries of _mproshut.exe. Does anyone else find this on their
systems?

3) We have a training database set up, using a copy of our live
database. We use the Progress online backup & restore utility to
copy the database over. After the server has been up and running
for about a month, I can not run the restore utility. The system has
run out of resources, and I need to re-boot the server to free them
up. This may be related to item #2 above, but I'm not sure. Does
anyone else have this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Cool! Same as us!

You can limit the log size. Not sure if you can stop the logging
though.

This is normal. There's a progress parameter that controls the
number of (progress) servers that start up. Can't remember it
and I'm at home now

Could very well be. Check what your memory usage is.

Same as us only our server is also PDC and has tape
drive in the unit using Arcserve 6.6 (now unsupported)

Have you checked the "Log Settings..."? We have ours
set to "Overwrite Events as Needed"

We have not run into this. I usually restore training
during slow times but even during the day we have not
run out of resoureces.
We have dual 350 PIII's and 348 MegO'Ram

Malcolm,

In the server's Event Viewer program you can configure the
logs to roll over after a certain size or number of messages.
This is configurable for each log (System, Application and
Security).

Regarding your resource problem, how is your NT server
configured - RAM, hdd, etc? What Progress patch level is
it at?

have fun,
John

Additional setup info:

The NT server is set up as the PDC. It has a single 667MHz P-III
cpu (upgradeable to 2 CPU's), 512 Meg of ram, and 2 ea SCSI-UW
HDD's formated in NTFS, each on their own controller card (for
mirroring).
