Terminal Service

Dina,

There is not a huge cost saving in running lots of Terminal Service users.
The "dumb" terminals are compact and cost less than half the price of normal
clone PC's.
We have about 10 in our Head Office (where our Servers are located) out of a
total of 30.
Some of the Terminal Service users need Vantage, but don't use MS Office
applications
(e.g. Factory Floor Data Collection users), so we don't have to worry about
Office licences for them.
These "dumb" terminals are very stable and require less maintenance than
PC's with Hard Drives.
It suits us to have a combination of PC's and dumb terminals.
It would be worth getting some quotes to check whether it is feasible for
you.

Regards

Rodney Warwick

The client is buried on our server. By default I believe it sits at:

C:\WINNT\system32\clients\tsclient\win32\disks

You can put the contents of disk1 and disk2 into the same directory (on an
install CD or in a shared folder) - makes for an easier install, or just run
it from disk1. It knows where to find disk2.

On your server go to Start >>Programs >> Administrative Tools >> Terminal Services Client Creator.
If Administrative tools is not in your Start menu then access it from the control panel

Try running TightVNC (http://www.tightvnc.org/). It should give much
better berformance when using the high compression settings.

James,

You can download the installable client from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/recommended/TSAC/default.asp

...kinda a wierd install. You install this which gives you a directory
with the files to install terminal services from. It works though.

AE

We use TS with Citrix XP for our 2 remote locations and it works great.
Since upgrading to the XP version and using Server 2K there has been a
noticeable increase in performance and reliability.

Dina,

I stopped using terminal server about 4 years ago. Personally I found it
too complicated. Or maybe I'm just too stupid. Seems like the companies
that have used it successfully are a tad bigger than us. ( Translation - if
you have the time to figure it out it's probably a good thing but it's not
simple either. )

Issues:

* Hardware for the server should not be overlooked - you'll want to give
the box a bunch of RAM and don't be shy on horsepower. If you post how many
intended stations you plan on using someone on the list can probably give
you some ideas on server requirements.

* Watch out for MS licensing ... Unless it has changed recently you have to
have 1 client license for every MS product installed on you terminal server
for every possible client whether they use it or not.

* Another option is something like a Wyse terminal running embedded mini-XP
operating system. There's just enough stuff to run something like
PcAnywhere or VNC for remote control. At the other end - in your server
room - stack up some small form factor PC's running whatever you want.
Make that 1 mini-remote for every PC. This is cheaper if you are only
talking about 1-10 remotes? I'm not sure where the cutoff is but there is a
point where terminal server SHOULD be considered. You could also use any
old P-133 PC or whatever you now consider non-functional as a remote PC just
running PcAnywhere or VNC. One advantage of this is that remote users truly
get their own PC's and you can install only what they need and the PC's are
no longer "remote" ... they are somewhere on site where you can go kick them
if you need to.

* With the PcAnywhere / VNC type option you can also setup "application
server" type PCs. As in, setup one PC with Visual Basic if it is used
occasionally by 3 different people. Only 1 person could use it at time but
you also only need 1 license.

At any rate, as you can tell, I'm willing to explore alternatives before
jumping into Terminal Server. Call it old age, call it being lazy, whatever
... I'm less inclined to buy tech just for fun anymore ... especially MS
products.

While not an advocate of Terminal Server alone, I am a huge fan of Terminal Server with the addition of Citrix MetaFrame. Especially MetaFrame XP which finally simplifies the printer autocreation process (old Citrix users will appreciate this enhancement!) Once it is configured properly it is rock solid. Also, you obtain decent performance even on a slow dial up connection.

I second Todds cautions on hardware. Don't scrimp. There are some tools on the Microsoft and Citrix web sites that will help you to calculate how much horsepower you will need in your specific environment. As for Microsoft Licensing...Microsoft changes there licensing scams every other day so assume that whatever you do you'll be out of compliance tomorrow anyway.

More then half of our company runs on Terminal services. There are some users who have SCSI devices or need high end video otherwise everyone here would be on T.S. We use Televideo thin clients running CE.NET. Our T.S. is Windows 2003 Enterprise. I couldn't be more pleased. I wouldn't be able to support this many users by myself without it. No more crashing hard drives, no more network card troubles, no OS to reinstall. We run Office 2000 Pro on it without a problem. The setup process for Office is a little different but besides that, everything worked great. We just upgraded to Vantage 6.0 and it made the upgrade process go so much faster and smoother. Many of our users really like to be able to get in from home.

We use it mostly for our remote offices (half our total users), but also a
third of users in our Head Office use Terminal Service.
We use it for both Vantage and Microsoft Office, and find Vantage is
actually faster via the Terminal Service.
The Citrix (Terminal Server) users in our Head Office access via "dumb"
terminals (No Hard Drive). To have more
Head Office users running on Citrix would also mean purchasing more Terminal
Service licences, which can be costly.

I do not believe that you save anything in licensing costs. You still need
one MS Office license for each user. If you have ten dumb terminals which
all have access to MS Office thru terminal server you will need ten MS
Office licenses. On the other hand if you have people using TS from home
and they have office on their home PC's then you do not need additional
licenses.
