Testing on 5.1

I had encouraging stats this weekend.

I ran the Schema Changes from 5.0 to 5.1 right on the Server (after installing the Vantage Client on the server), and the Schema Changes took only 3 hrs and 16 minutes - and that was with Crash Protection ON. This was on the weekend with no users on the system. On my laptop, it took 7 hrs with Crash Protection OFF, and 9 hrs with Crash Protection ON. I imagine the SCSI drives had a lot to do with it.

I thought I would start a thread dedicated to testing and information regarding moving to 5.1.

My initial input is a correction to a previous email I sent to the group stating that the conversion from 5.0 to 5.1 just took a few hours. I guess I miscalculated the start time in the process, because subsequent conversions have been consistenly as follows both on our dual 450mhz Server and Offline on my 800mhz laptop:

With Crash Protection OFF: 7 hrs. for Schema Changes.
With Crash Protection ON: 9 hrs for Schema Changes.

After Schema Changes, the Database Conversion (upon first Vantage Login) takes about 12 minutes.

I am leaning towards moving the database to my laptop for our life conversion as it won't hog the network, and I can take it home with me to do the fine tuning overnight - then copy it back on to the network.

Any other input on this process would be greatly appreciated. My next step is to set up ODBC and begin converting reports to see how that process goes (as far as table changes, etc.).

I discovered one REALLY NICE table change that will benefit us at Liberty Electronics.
There is a new field PartWhse.OnHandQty that is an aggregate of the PartBin.OnHandQty for all Bins that contain a particular part. This will be a big help in some reports in which we had to use a subreport to go get the onhand qty for a part. Using the above field should speed up those reports considerably - or allow them to be run in Report Builder instead.

Troy,

I think that's a great idea. I was thinking I needed a NT server to test
on, but my notebook has better specs than the old NT server. Do I need to
be running NT to run Vantage or can I run Vantage under Windows 2000.
What's on your notebook?

Ed,

I'm using Windows 2000 Pro and things work great. The only different with W2K is that when you set up the Progress Explorer, you have to add a /s to the command line in the Progress Explorer shortcut so that it can be run in Author Mode (so you can set the Vantage startup settings).

Troy,

Our problem of moving from 4 to 5 is that after follow all the steps
in the guidance, at almost half of the way, we could not find the
database of 4 in the new folder. If you have the same problem and
have a solution, please show me the way out.

Thanks.

What command did you use to copy? Did you use the Procopy command, or did you just copy the whole database over using Windows commands? Are the files in the right place but Vantage says they are not there?

We used Procopy and there is no physical database file
in the new folder.
Thanks
