Testing SQL and Appserver on same server - setup question

We run Vantage this way. When we purchased Vantage this was the recommended configuration. We use ODBC to the server. Vantage runs about as expected. It's not terribly fast, but as long as you keep your SQL database maintained, it works ok.

We have two Raid controllers. We have different 5 Raid Partitions configured for different things.

I'm testing running the SQL on the same server as the app server.
In that scenario are you still using ODBC to connect the appserver to the SQL database?
Has anyone done this?
We have a new server coming and I have an opportunity to change our current setup if it improves performance.

Yes, it is still ODBC, it's just to the local server instead of another
server.

If you are going to do this, I would suggest that you have completely
different sets of disks, not just partitions, for the OS, the App, the
Database, the Logs, and then a last one for backups, tempdb, and the
EpicorData folder.

If you can have more than one RAID Card in there to distribute the channels,
that is nice too.
