Tracking Die Usage

I don't know if others have offered this response yet but we add the die (tool) in the BOM and backflush it based on the number of parent parts received into stock. That way the negative on-hand balance for the die tells you the number of hits on the tool. We have gone further and developed an add-on tooling management solution that allows engineering personnel to establish tooling trigger points based on the number of hits on each tool and when the system should alert them that a tool has surpassed its hit trigger limit and a tooling inspection process is due.

We went live on version 8.03.408B yesterday and the tooling manager came to me wanting to know how we can use vantage to track die usage. The only thing that I have been able to figure is making each die an operation. From that I could determine how many times the die had been used based on the job quantities being produced. My other thought is to figure a way to integrate the data from the LETS system into the Vantage DB. Has anyone else set something up like this?
We keep dies as part numbers, attach them as bill of material
requirements (at zero dollars) and issue a fixed quantity of 1. We then
set an inventory value based on how frequent we want o review those dies
for maintenance. A supplemental report shows the tooling manager which
dies are up for inspection by virtue of a negative on hand qty. After
completion of inspection he does a qty adjustment back into inventory.
This works fairly well in that the operators on the floor have good
visibility as to the tooling requirements of the related operations as
well as tracking die usuage.

Do you attach the die part number in the bill of materials a subcomponent,
or a material, or some other way? We're considering this method for tracking
but are leaning toward subcomponents so that we have visibility of the
revision field in job travelers.

What if you set up each die as a resource (called as non-primary detail in pertinent OPs).
You could then monitor via utilization.
