Unable to read barcode

Thanks all for the information. What actually was causing the problem
was the MTLTAGS.DBF was using the fields BCPart which printed a barcode
but was formatted like this -- '*partnum........* The scanner could not
read the '.....' apparently. When I created a new field formatted like
*partnum* it worked.

Thanks!

We are on 6.1 and I am using the dataworks barcode font on receiving
labels. I've been printing them on the labels for a year but now they
want to scan the label and the scanner is not reading the barcode. To
get in all the data I had to make the barcode a smaller size but would
this cause the problem. Other than that what could it be. I used the
standard label and am printing on a Dymo label printer.

Hi Sandy,

I have had the same thing randomly happen to me.

It turned out that the barcode scanner has built in memory and is configured when new. Ours lost the settings.

With the scanner you should have got a manual full of barcodes. These program the scanner.

I think with most scanners you can do a factory reset then set it from scratch.

I think 3of9 can go quite small before it cant be read by a scanner.

Hope this helps.

Chris

If the bar code stripes are too small it can affect the scan. A lot then depends on the resolution of the printer (dpi level) so that the distinction between the bands is clear. Also I've found that the requirement for a clear space at either end is stricter when small. Often when shinking a bar code it gets crammed against other markings at either end (text, box line, etc...) and this will affect it too. With larger barcodes there tends to be more free space around it. Another thought, just incase, is the formatting of the string being barcoded...just to make sure there are still the * at either end. Especially if the field size was, say 15 and you are now trying to print 20 characters (more data)...the trailing * could have gotten chopped off.

Does the scanner read the barcode at the old font size?
if so, you need to reset the scanner maybe.
Don't know what kind you have, but Symbols come with a barcode you can scan to "reset all defaults" or something similar.
Try scanning that and then trying again.
Also, you might need to enable Code 39 full ascii, too.
Keep those reset codes near the place where people use the scanners, because it can happen once in a while.
