Just out of curiosity.

Now that it appears that you are going to need PCs with 3.0ghz / 1 gig of
ram +++ to run V8 at a reasonable speed plus server/network upgrades.

I'm going to guess that for most Vantage customers that means replacing a
huge percentage of your PCs, servers, and perhaps wiring + switches.

Given that when do you expect to migrate?

Or, perhaps a better question, when will you be able to migrate?

We pushed our upgrade back from 2005 to 2006. Given the instability of V8
and the stiff hardware requirements I doubt we will seriously consider the
upgrade until 2007.

We would have to replace every computer in the shop, both network switches
and the server. I don't even want to think about pulling new cable. Office
computers are on a 3-4 year upgrade cycle and would be replaced as needed.
Shop computers average 5+ years old and are only replaced as needed.

It is kind of discouraging that even the brand new purchases are starting to
look a little lightweight.

Hey Todd,
I'm going to try those TOE nics before I recommend a mass PC upgrade.
If that does not yield satisfactory results, I will see if it makes
sense to swap MB/RAM/CPU's.
If that does not yeiLd satisfactory results, I will recommend new PC's.
My best guess is
That we would need about 50 - 60 new units, 4th quarter 2006.

Right now, for us, it is totally driven by the noise level of bug reports and the frequency of patches. When the product starts to settle down I will resume the oft postponed "investigation" of the benefits and costs and present it to management with a recommendation. The investigation will probably take 3-4 months and involve a test server (dedicated and isolated). Once we commit to implementing the test server will be the base for report conversions.

Total time from commit to implement...probably 9-12 months. In this time, as we already are trying to, most of the infrastructure will be gradually upgraded to be "V8 ready". Problem is that target keeps moving up. Two years ago based on recommendation at Perspectives I upgraded our Sales dept. to 1Ghz CPUs to be V8 ready. Not any more. Lately I have been buying 2.8Ghz CPUs with 1GB RAM - looks like this might become marginal too. But we will have at least 18 months to gradually upgrade the desks and spread the cost out. Shop floor Data Collection will be a hit at implementation time. I might look at TS for that depending on how it plays with V8.

The production server for V8 will be a major implementation time expense...then again, the current server will be 8 years old by then and due to be replaced anyway. Management has already been "softened up" to expect the server/storage upgrades to be $20K+. In the mean time, like the desktops, the network is gradually becoming more and more 1Gb capable - at least between servers and switches.

Best case for us right now...V8 is ready enough to investigate by March 2006, then recommend by June 2006 and implement in summer of 2007.

We bought 2.8GHz machines w/1G RAM for V8. They work "okay". Not
lightening speed like V6 did. However, in my case, upper management
decided that V8 was the way to go back in May (against my wishes).
Again, from my viewpoint, I didn't see a significant upgrade to the LAN
side as a big plus (even though we have some Gb), but the biggest
improvements were Workstation Speed, Memory, and speed of the hard
drive. On the other side of our T1 (1.5 Mb), differences in using
financials, sales, and materials, there wasn't a whole lot of difference
from the corporate site.

I wish I had waited to implement V8, for the reasons mentioned (it was
just too new), but "I yam what I yam". If I bring in a 3+ GHz machine
in the future, I would like to see how that compares to the 2.8's I
have.
