V8.X - Moving Customizations from one server to another

I figured out how to get it. I just added the Mes dll to the Menu in
regular Vantage and launced from there.

For you Citrix gurus...an odd occurance that perhaps you can shed light on.

User remoted in on Monday from at home. Ran Vantage. Closed his Citrix desktop without exiting Vantage (X in screen corner). Closed Citrix IE window to without disconnecting or logging off - again X in corner. Tuesday and today gets "no more licenses" messages on every Vantage login attempt. I verify plenty of licenses. Can't see user's PC in the Promon list but change him to allow multiple logins. Bang!, he's in. I notice that the Citrix server shows as a PC using Vantage so I have him remote in locally via server name. Yup, there is Vantage sitting on the task bar running on HIS remote desktop...logged in under his Vantage username...consuming a license in his name.

Question - Why did that occurance of Vantage not time out per our 4 hour inactivity timeout rule? Is something in Citrix keeping it alive?

Question - Is there a way to force Vantage (or other programs) to close upon exiting from Citrix? Do disconnect or logout accomplish this? I may have a user training issue to deal with if they can't close with the 'X'.

Since the user disconnected as opposed to logging off they are in
essence still logged into Vantage. After years of training, we still
run into this issue. If you open the Citrix connection manager you can
force log off the offending connection.

There is a timeout setting you can set in the registry to "kill" user
sessions after so many minutes that could help these situations. It
also frees up license usage.

For Citrix or Vantage? We have Vantage set to 4 hours now. But the Citrix session seems to have kept it from being inactive so the Vantage timeout did not kill it. And, no, he was not running office data collection...just the Vantage main menu. It was sitting there "in use" for 48 hours and should have been terminated long before. I will ha ve to make sure remote users "log out" (as in Log out User from the Start/Shutdown menu) which should prompt the "OK to close Vantage" pop-up message and allow the user to close Vantage.

Like the Office Data Collection clock updating I was thinking there was something in a Citrix driven Vantage session that "looks like" activity thus prevents the timeout.

Hello,

We just setup a separate server for testing V8.03 patches. How do I copy
the customizations from one server to another? Where are they located?

Also, I installed the client for the new test server into another
directory on my PC so I could connect to both servers and it loaded the
customization that is used on the production server when I connect to
the test server. I know that customizations are cached locally but do
all installation of the client use the same cache? Is there a way to
separate?

Export the Customization to a shared folder and then Import them on
the other server. You export by going File ---> Export when you are
in the Customization you want to export. Then when You are prompted
to choose your customization on the new server, choose Import and
make sure you save it.

For all Citrix users, do the following:
In Active Directory, on the sessions tab, configure the 'End a Disconnected Session' option. I have chosen to end all disconnected sessions after two hours of inactivity. Before I did this, I ran into the same thing you are experiencing.

You mean the 239 page color glossy paper book, item # 12011-803? The one they charge for (aside from giving limited copies away here and there)? On one hand I hate to pay for things that should be included with a system (like documentation) but on the other hand I will willingly pay for items of this quality. Too bad the installation and administration documentation is not of this level. It might greatly reduce the frustration levels and support calls due to missteps in installing and administering. I have a gut feeling that poor documentation is at the root of many issues...including some part of performance. In the end, giving this type of documentation away would probably cost Epicor far far less and make the customers far far happier.

BTW...I suspect they may eventually create books, of similar quality, to deal with MRP, Scheduling and other modules. Why not start at the beginning though with 'How to Install' or "How Vantage (or Epicor Manufacturing) Works'?

Hello. My company is in the process of implementing Vantage 8.0.3
running in a MS Windows 2003/SQL Server 2005 environment.

Our Project Manager ordered Hard Copy User's Guides. She doesn't see
a need for electronic copies.

Does anyone know if there is a way to get the user's guide and any
other documentation in a PDF or another electronic version?

Maybe on-line help is sufficient. I don't know at this point.

Thanks.

If you enable tracing and load up a customized form you can see the
calls to load the customization out of the chunk table in the db

You can change the Citrix ICA connection settings forcing the connection to reset itself after a specific amount of time.
By default the connection is set to "not time out". We were running into Vantage license issues similar to what you are presently experiencing. For some unknown reason users refuse to log out of Citrix correctly. So when they exit Citrix they just click on the "X" and they think everything is fine. But in reality everything that they had running on the Citrix desktop remains running in the disconnected session and if Vantage was running they hang on to their Vantage license even in the disconnected session.
To make the changes go to the Citrix box and click on <START> <Programs> <Citrix> <MetaFrame XP> <Citrix Connection Configuration>. Double click on the Ica-Tcp connection and then the "Advanced" connection settings". There are 3 "time out settings there. The one that you need to change will be the one in the middle, "Disconnection". Uncheck the box that says "No Timeout" You will then be able to put a number in the box. That number represents minutes that a disconnected session will remain alive before the system resets the connection. When a session gets reset it terminates any applications that may be running during that session and thus closing that user's Vantage session.
I have my connection set to reset after 5 minutes and have been running it that way for the past couple of years without any problems. I can't remember for sure but I believe you need to re-boot the server for these changes to take effect.
The other time outs that you see there don't need to be changed unless you chose to do so. The "Connection" time out will disconnect a user's Citrix connection after a specified length of time in minutes. Even if the user is in the middle of doing something. When the connection reaches the specified minutes, it is reset. The "Idle" reset will reset the Citrix connection if there is no activity after a specified length of time, again, in minutes.
Fire me an email if you have any questions.
Good Luck,
Bob
