Vantage 8.0 Single User mode

(This is Adam; I work with Rob)

We found out what it took to get Vantage 8.0 in single user mode. All
of the changes are made on the AppServer itself. First off, make sure
your database is shut down and not set to automatically start. Next
pull up the properties for your AppServer, expand Agent and select
Properties. Replace the contents of the 'Server startup parameters'
with this:

-db C:\epicor\mfgsys80\db\mfgsys -1

Now click on Pool Range and set all values to '1'. At this point I
was able to hit OK, start the AppServer, and my Vantage client fired
up with no problems. The client seems to be running about twice as
fast in this mode.

We are setting up V8 in a test environment.

How do you connect in single-user mode in V8?

(Don't laugh, I know it's probaly right in front of me)

HI Noob,

I'm not sure I understand what you're asking... but, I'll give this one a try. When Vantage is installed on your server, it generates Vantage Icons, which serve as shortcuts. Those shortcuts (and a copy of the client files) need to be installed (or copied to) the end-user machine. The end-user (single-user) simply clicks on the Icon to link to Vantage.

Does that help you out?

Not quite sure what you are attempting. Put you can place in single
user mode by stopping the database

Ok, to clarify, when I said "We are setting up V8 in a test
environment" what I meant was, in order to see what v8 is all about
we have installed both the server and the client on a spare PC that
has less than recommended specs.

On previous versions of Vantage, we could set the client connection
to single-user mode instead of multi-user mode to speed things up.
OpenEdge 10 supports this but I am still fumbling around with the new
Vantage client and server setup and haven't been able to figure out
where I can change this.

Use the "pro" command

Open a command prompt on the DB server

Navigate to the appropriate DB directory

Type: "pro <db-name> -1"

The -1 parameter sets the db in single user mode however, I believe this
is optional as single user is the default parameter for the pro command.

I guess we don't know until one tries but I wonder if setting the single user
mode at the database will work. Does each appServer take a session? Task
Agent? Aren't we really looking for a way to limit the number of sessions?

What you may want to try is to open up your Progress Explorer Tool, do a
properties on the AppServer, expand Broker (in the tree), choose Advanced
Features and limit the Maximum Client Instances to one. I'm no expert but if
you play around with this on your Test instance, you'll find out if it works
without hurting anything. If you find some combination that works, please
report back to the list as others may find it helpful.

Mark W.
I may be totally ignorant in this area (my test server is still in the box) but I am following this thread closely for future reference. Again, I may be way off base but I have notes (in quotes) from the V8 Admin Sunday Workshop at Perspectives, given by Ben Nixon, that say;
"One App Server for each 3-4 Users"
--- so I suspect there would have to be at least one for only one user but no further performance hit for 2-3 more users

"Max Servers MUST BE greater or equal to 10 in order to start the DB"
---- so if you set this to 1 thinking to limit resources it may not allow DB to start
---- I think since this is the MAX it can grow to depending on number of users, so having it >= 10 won't hurt if number of clients is limited anyway

Just some thoughts prompted by my notes so if someone with more experience can clarify please do so.

You may be right, I guess the only way to tell is to shut down the App
Servers, run the pro command and then see if the App Servers all start.

Prowin32 can also be used and I believe with that utility, you can
actually set a specific number of users.

The PRO command will engage single user mode at the database level only
as you suspect.
