That's not entirely true - the vantage 8 group would
have a different tag in the email header. If a member

This seems to have gotten a little off topic.

However I was involved previously with a user group
for another erp system and it was separated into
application and technical. Over time other groups
appeared for specific applications within the erp
system.

Because Vantage 8.0 is so completely different from
what has come before it might make some sense to have
a separate group.

I don't believe another Vantage Group exists unless one of the individual
member groups hosts one. Also, I don't believe that there are enough active
installations of V8 to support a second group. Keep in mind this group has
depth that might not be available in a dedicated group. All of us are
watching closely what happens with V8 and at some point most in this group
will migrate to V8, so in time it will become primarily a V8 group.

I am a standard "lurker" in this group. I delete most messages, but open
those of interest to me. Currently our company is on 6.00.526 but I plan to
take us to 6.1 within a month. I hope to be on 8 by the end of the year.

My point is, I would prefer that discussions about 8 remain in this group.
I'm sure most of the people on this list plan to move to 8 (eventually). We
don't usually have a choice. There may be valuable information in setup and
transition, usage and a million other items that we could gather from your
discussions.

Give it time Tom, there will be plenty of people to sing the praises and
plenty to point out the weaknesses. No matter what flavor of ERP system is
in place a group such as this is its greatest asset. We have a very active,
knowledgeable, and civil group. Better than most I suspect.

I spoke with my Epicor contact last week and was told it is at GA.
Sounds like they are trying to control the release of it to accounts
that want to get it for testing and coming up with implementation plans.
He gave me instructions to follow for getting the software. Since I
don't know if all areas are different, I would contact your rep to get
the software.

The last I heard from Epicor was that 8 was being distributed to new
installs only. They were still working on the import for existing users,
with a prediction for late Feb. (gee that's about now isn't it). Epicor
doesn't directly respond to this list. But an OFF LIST comment would be
welcome, hint hint.

8.0 went GA a few weeks ago.

It was confirmed you need to contact your CAM. They will forward the
informmation on to Consulting. After speaking with the Reginal Consulting
Manager, you are able to get 8.0 shipped to you.

Also, the Advanced Print Module is available for versions prior to 8.0.
Contact your CAM for details however this module allows you to distribute
reports not only on a schedule to to contact information contained in the
report and it also allows for bursting. IE: a daily batch of invoices 50
pages long can be faxed to each individual recipient in the print out. This
uses a type of OCR (optical character regonition) and integrates with a fax
and email software. Templates are programmed to 'teach' the software to
identify the document and extract the method of delivery and process.

Depending on who you talk to at Epicor it is considered GA.

After we get further along with our project and I educate myself in Vantage,
I'll share info. However, we are a new customer going straight to v8, so I
won't be able to compare experiences to older versions.

Here is the straight word from Epicor on V8:

"It's GA. You have to ask for it. The main reason is that although it is
technically possible to install/upgrade and go there is some amount of user
training that should be at least discussed prior to doing so. There are
also some configuration considerations that should be addressed prior to
upgrading.

Both the Database Server and the Application Server can reside on the same
server box and that is the "default" configuration we believe that most
people will need/use. It is possible for the Application Server to reside
on a different, or even multiple boxes, however, if needed for scalability
reasons (many hundreds of users)."

Thanks for the info Shirley. As much as I would like to use the new features in 8.0 as soon as possible I appreciate the approach Epicor is taking while it is still early in the game. Making sure upgrade sites are prepared, trained and understand what's going on will not only help make their upgrade more successful but also help keep Epicor from spending resources on sites that jump in blindly and mess things up. If they can coach people to do A, B C and D steps in that order and know that that will work then the support people won't get flooded by calls from sites that got in trouble because they didn't know what they were doing.

By the time the next Perspectives rolls around there ought to be a few pretty good case studies to learn from.

The current patch level is 8.0.613 with patch 614 hopefully available this
week. There's another patch 700, presumably on CD, yet to go. We're treating
that as the GA release.

This seems to have gotten a little off topic.

However I was involved previously with a user group
for another erp system and it was separated into
application and technical. Over time other groups
appeared for specific applications within the erp
system.

Because Vantage 8.0 is so completely different from
what has come before it might make some sense to have
a separate group.

I think that would work well for a forum based board. This being an email
based board that will not work.

Now if this could be converted to a forum that would be useful. The
downside is that needs $$$ to pay for hosting and bandwidth.

Actually it would be nice if Epicor would host a community forum. It could
actually be used as a selling point for prospective customers.

Any thoughts?

In regards to the V8 deployment status here is a little more information
from Epicor. Also, in the creation of the group (before the turn of the
century) the group decision at that time was to keep the group independent
of any corporate control. This does give the users some opportunity to do
some "controlled" venting, emphasis on controlled. The group has been
fairly success to now, any major changes to the format will take a
convincing majority of the users (there are 1059 active users). To be fair
a significant majority of the active users would actually have to vote and a
significant number of those voting would have to want the change.
Alternatively, there is nothing at all preventing an independent creation of
a group, (Todd correct me if I'm wrong on that point).

Epicorian Comment:
Our Product Marketing group is putting together a final "Vantage 8 Upgrade
Toolkit" as mentioned in last month's Vantage World News. The toolkit will
include a check-list of items that we want to verify for V8 Readiness. Once
those items are all verified or completed, we can ship out V8. We're
supposed to have the toolkit next week. I've also been told that there have
been some significant improvements in V8 performance with the very latest
patches, and ultimately we'd like the version that is shipped to customers
to include these. This means we need to re-master our CD's, which takes a
few weeks. Availability of that version is expected for the third week of
March, which is right
around when folks should be done with all check-list items.

As I mentioned in our phone call, these are distribution, education, and
implementation readiness issues. For this release we are being extremely
careful to ensure that both Epicor and our customers are setup for a
successful transition.
