Vantage 8.3 adding tables to crystal reports

And always remember; not only add table to RDD; but define relationshp at the RDD. And tie that RDD to the newly added Report Style and re-generate that xml. Then assure that table is added at the Database Expert; and confirm that relationship a the Crystal level. It is not automatic!

Paul, if you have a real-world example, give us the specifics and
perhaps it'll be easier to describe.

A short-cut with some tables in a Report Data Definition is the "Linked
Tables" tab on the Report Data Definition Maintenance screen. Some of
the brilliant software developers had enough forethought to pre-link up
related tables to the existing tables already in the standard Report
Data Definitions.

I've been trying to do this for months, I've received Epicor's
instructions on how to do this, but they never work no matter which
table/report I'm currently trying to do this in.

Could someone post a working example of this with instructions?

thank you

Paul, are you talking about modifying the data definition so that you can pull additional fields into the Crystal Report?

I've used the linked tables many times, thanks for the help all the same.

Here is the specific example:

I am trying to add the tracking number (from the customer shipment entry to the Invoice. Linking the InvcDtl's PackNum field to the ShipHead PackNum field.

Although there is a linked table way of doing this, it doesn't work (no data appears for the packing slip or the tracking number)

So what I did was: I created a new report data definition, and added the ShipHead table to it. According to Epicor's instructions ( which to me are vague) I create a relationship and after fiddling with the options (linking fields to eachother etc) I end up nowhere, eventually the report doesn't run anymore (or takes so long that I cancel it).

"12. Go to File->New->New Relationship.
13. Create the relationships (if this is not done, you will see the added tables & fields, but you will never get data in them). This does not replace linking in Crystal.
A. Parent table can be any table that is in the tree.
B. Key: if no key, this is a temp table. You do not need to add a key (can be in the child table).
C. Child table will only be the added table.
D. Relationship fields - These don't have to match. If they are not valid, you will get no data or you will get multiple records (huge XML). If you link table by company only, you will get all of the data for the added table.
"

The relationship part is I believe where I'm missing the key steps.

thanks in advance!

In report data def. if you go more than two or three tables linked in a
chain it generally wont work.

I would recommend hanging a table off the company table then doing the join
in crystal.

I always start by trying to get too much information and then narrowing it down, so try a relation on the company table only first and see if it gets back all the records (ideally on a test system with not so many entries). Also try without any key. If you can get that then add another relation (keep company). Ocassionally I've had a table that just won't come in on a particular relation no matter what I do. In the list view also you can specify it to be an outer join but I can't remember right now what you have to enter in the 'jointype' column to make it do that..

Ok if I try this:

Make a new relationship
Parent Table: Company
Key: none
Child Table: ShipHead

hit save, the report doesn't show up at all (stalls in system manager)

If I add a relationship field:
Company to Company
Hit save, the report again stalls

I just don't get it, and what is frustrating is that in crystal reports or sql alone I could have done this in 1 minute.
How many entries do you have in ShipHead? I guess if there is a huge amount it could take forever. Does it create an .xml file at all? (\mfgsysdata\reports\%username%)? You are trying to preview the report, right? I assume you mean below parent table is Invcdtl. Try to add a field relationship on custnum maybe would narrow it down to a workable amount of records if getting too many is indeed your problem at this point.

There is a major limitation to this method which prevents you from
linking a table to a linked table. In other words, if you added a
table, RMAHead, to a report which did not have it then add another table
linked to the first you added, RMADTL, for example, the system will not
allow it.

I gave this report building technique an honest try primarily because I
liked the idea of the incorporated field level security. However, it
takes me at least 3 times as long, and I continually run into
limitations. I find building ODBC much more intuitive, and kind-of
secure.
