Vantage 8.x Global Alerts

I was overjoyed to finally discover that this is described in the Epicor Tools User Guide on page 473 onwards. To summarise, go to Executive Analysis -> Business Activity Management -> Setup -> Alert Attachments. There you can modify the contents of the Alert.mfgsys template for each vantage table it seems, including the MNSONOMA reference, and the port number.

A word of caution: if you are in the habit of copying your live database to Pilot or Training, then this reference (the port number at least) will need to be changed in the destination database, much as we now do with the SystemTaskAgent.

I spent some time going over the code in the attachment. It turns out
there are three lines that need to be fixed and the file works as it
should (if you have an open session it takes you straight to the record
that generated the alert).

As far as I am aware this has been broken for 3+ years and Epicor has
not been able to fix it.

I submitted a call 1610333ESC with all the details of what is broken and
where the 2 pieces of data can be found in the database (the app server

broken. The fix is simple, yet it has a priority of 3 and has not even
been responded to in over a week. If I had access to the source code, I
would have fixed this in less than a day and I am not a programmer.

Yes Aaron, it drove me nuts too, so we just gave up with it...!

What does the Alert.Mfgsys attachment do? Does it add (when working of
course) more functionality to the Global alerts? Our next project is to
bring e-mail in house, so we are not yet using Global alerts.

I never use the attachments anyway. I'm just glad the email is formatted
correctly and doesn't contain all that garbage anymore.

Jeff,
The attachment allows the person who received the alert to open the corresponding "item" in Vantage.
So, if the alert is triggered when a Sales Order exceeds the credit limit, the alert.mfgsys would let you open the Sales Order that triggered it with just dbl-clicking the attachment.
It's never worked for me.

Aaron,
What did you change to fix it? I've never looked in to it.
Thank you

Jeff,
The attachment to the alert "should", if you have an open vantage session...
Open the tracker of the record that caused the alert. So say you have a
global alert set for #1170 "Job engineered status has been changed".
When you release Job 0001234-1-1, an alert will be generated with an
attached file. The attachment if opened (and associated to
C:\client803\client\MfgSys.exe) will open Job Tracker to job
0001234-1-1. It's really very handy if you want to have someone review
jobs before they are worked on, or if alert #1160 is active, say have
someone who engineers a job and then have it reviewed by someone who
will release it. They are taken right to the job in tracker and can
right click into job entry if desired. There are many uses for these
and the power is in it automatically opening the tracker view of the
item in Vantage.
Best,
Aaron

Tony,
You have to save the attachment and then enter your appserver
information (server name and port number) in two places (one in line 13
and one in line 127, replace "mnsonoma:3831" with your server and port)
then replace the Company in line 125 with the appropriate company for
the transaction. Then double click (associated as previously posted)
and it works.
Best of luck,
Aaron

Don't mean to derail the thread, but what is the trick to getting
global alerts functioning in the first place? I've set up alerts for
me when jobs complete or material is received but I have yet to get one.

I had read before that the person entry email or name needs to be the
same as the username or something like that. Either way, I have yet to
get them flowing.
Patrick,
System Management, Company Maintenance, Company, Email...
Port = any unused port, I picked 2222
Global Alert From = Valid email address
SMTP = valid smtp server that your Vantage server can reach (must not
be set to require authorization and be trusted to send email).

Then...
Production Management, Job Management, Setup, Global Alerts...
choose an alert, set from address (may or may not need to be real, but
in valid format), Alert, set to:and cc: with valid email addresses, Set
Active and send Alert.

That should do it.

In 8.xxx you need to start the Global Alert process in System Management ->
Utilities.

I thought I had a document on it, but I can't find it. Try to search
EpicWeb for the doc.

Oops, that's right, set it up also and the System Agent in the same

Aaron,

Similarly frustrated. I have tried to get them to fire when a pack
list has shipped and have not yet succeeded.
This is a long overdue fix.

How do you attach to an existing call?

Dave,
Call support and ask to be added to existing call number 1610333ESC.
The more that request it, the more likely a fix.
Just an interesting side note, the "Send Record via Email" function uses
the same formated attachment, yet that apparently works in 405A.
How strange it works in one part of the system and not another.

Aaron,

I have called and added our site to your call. During the call she
said that it was in development now.

Your comment "How strange it works in one part of the system and not
another" no longer surprises me.

Try to create a Call Log in the "Help Desk-Case Entry" screen of the
CRM module, and none of the "Call Log" buttons work. Go to the
Customer Tracker which is not editable, and all the Call Log buttons work.

I have several Users now using the "Send Record via Email" function,
however: Open a Part Entry screen-RIGHT click in the part number field
and select "Time Phase". On the "Time Phased Inquiry" screen go to
"File-Send-Send Record By Email". We receive a message box that it's
not going to happen.

Thanks Aaron,
