That sounds pretty close to what we are after. There is a possibility that
I'll be able to have some custom programing done so it gets massaged then
pulled straight into Vant.... (oops) Emanufacturing. Expect a call from me
when my fires are burning a bit lower. Thanks

Has anyone run the purge utility? Does it slow system performance while
running? How long does it take? I'm showing about 100,000 records to be
purged.

I don't know what it does to the system, but I purged a huge group of labor records (about 2 years worth) on Vantage 5.0 - I think it was over 100,000 records - and it took 10 to 20 minutes as I recall. I didn't time it, but it didn't take hours either. No One else was logged in at the time.

Has anyone out there in Vantage land had any experience with direct
acquisition of data from the shop floor. Our processes are very simple. We
want to track the opening and closing of a press, the temperature at the
time of those events, an operator number and a job number. We want to do
this on 50 machines and feed this to a single desk top computer. I'm
visualizing a data line to look like the example below.

OPERATOR PRESS# JOB# EVENT EVENT TIME EVENT
TEMPERATURE

23456 50 10000 OPEN 15:00
320
23456 50 10000 CLOSE 15:10
315
78910 22 10500 OPEN 15:00
350
78910 22 10500 CLOSE 15:00
350


The idea being the above is enough data for us generate job data and and
process control data. We really dont want to put a computer on every
machine.

This sounds like a PLC type function. You will need some type of PLC sensor
device, connected to a computer, to collect the data and likely would need
to import it to either a spreadsheet or database file system to organize
into something meaningful. Hope this helps, if you want to contact me

I'll assume you have older presses without PLC's or dedicated CNC controls.
To obtain temperature and Opening/Closing you can use a variety of sensors
which feed a data acquistion card. The specifics depend on what type of
sensors will meet your application and the location of the devices in
proximity to the data acqusition card (in a PC). A good spot to start and
ask questions is Omega Engineering www.omega.com <http://www.omega.com> .
Getting the job number and operator number is a little trickier but I bet
the techs at Omega can give you a recommendation. In addition you will need
to write some programs to make the acquisition device poll the sensors and
store the data, but most products come with graphical tools to help with
this.

With 50 machines to integrate I would suggest getting a control company
involved. If you do not have someone on staff familiar with all of this it
can be a major undertaking. For pro's it seems like a pretty simple
application.
