It's scary to even think that our server which Vantage is running on may
fail one day. I am wondering if anyone is running Vantage on clustered
servers. We are ready to purchase another server for backup purposes, we
might as well use the current and the new server in clustered configuration.

You really don't need a backup server, as long as you have another pc
adequately configured to act as a server. Our new server (late 2002)
crashed (mother board and primary drive problems) and I simply moved the
mirrored hard drive from the server to my workstation for the few days it
took to get the server back up and running. Changed the IP address for the
network card and Vantage was running in about 20 minutes. It was
inconvenient not to have a workstation, but it saved the cost of another
server and I know that I have a recovery plan if the server does crash.

This is similar to what we do. I have a backup server sitting off-line with
Vantage installed and ready to go. If I need to swap it in I'll fire it up,
change IPs, apply the same patch as per current production system, and
restore the database to it. Shouldn't take more than an hour.

You should also keep a couple of full backups of the production box just in
case, and update these regularly. A backup of the production database by
itself goes off-site every night.

Clustering, as far as I'm concerned, is for the Fortune 500, not small to
medium sized manufacturers. Too much cost/complexity.

p.s. I actually have swapped our production boxes back and forth a couple of
times, but I did this by having two different IPs and two different WINS
names, i.e., erpserver & erpserver2. This works, but clients are noticably
slower after a swap because there are quite a few references to the original
server name in the regististries. Have to do a search/replace on every
workstation to bring them up to speed. Next time I'll try keeping the same
IP address and deal with whatever WINS problems this may cause.

I have our old server a (400Mhz machine) running on the same network with
our main server. The backup server is set up with progress and vantage and
able to be run at any time. I use the online backup utility on our main
server to back up the database to our backup server twice a day and then an
hour later the backup server runs a batch file that restores that backup
database to the current database on our backup server. To do this I leave
the database shut down on the backup server so that it can do the restore.
If our main server fails, I can just change the ip of the backup and start
the database and be up in less than 5 minutes. At the most, I will loose 12
hours of data entry since the backup is done every 12 hours as we run three
shifts 24 hours a day.
