Vantage server sizing

In addition to the other comments - try to build in as much redundancy as
you can. Dual hot swapable power supplies sized so that either can handle
the full load, dual fans, dual NICs (load sharing type would be good). Also
- a smaller, seperate, system disk off the RAID pair helps balance the load
and if the budget can be stretched have a warm spare (same size) for the
mirrored disks to fail-over to on the fly. Memory is cheap now so go for
1GB if you can - on seperate 512MB modules. DLT or some backup media big
enough to hold twice your disk capacity (even if not all used, yet) to avoid
future cartirdge swapping or deciding what not to backup. We have a single
Xeon 550Mhz CPU and I have not seen it as being a bottle-neck for 40-50
users. Dual would have been better for redundancy.

Just a couple cents worth.

Subject: [Vantage] Vantage server sizing

Hi Everyone,

Would anyone care to share knowledge/info on server sizing? We
are implementing Vantage for a user population of 75. Of these 10 will
link from a remote site via Terminal Server.

From your experience how would you size the primary database
server and the Terminal Server boxes? Needless to say this will be using
Windows 2000 Server.

Thanks,

Rob Croft

I run 55 users with a 1.1gb database on a dell 2300 with the following
specs:
duel pent III 500mhz, 512 cache, 512mb RAM
2x3 back plane, 64mb Cache PERC 2 RAID Controller, RAID 1
2-18gb 7200rpm ULTRA 2 SCSI Drives, Intel PRO 100 + Ethernet NIC
20/40 DLT 4000 Tape Drive.

This is a BDC. If you put your fastest machine as your BDC with will steal
the PDC's work. My PDC is a 200mhz server. Don't put vantage on a PDC or
BDC.

How to talk your boss into purchasing those large hard drives note:
Drive sizing peak load:
Version 4 production database 1.1gb.
Version 4 training copy 1.1gb.
Version 4 FYE Auditors copy 1.1gb.
4am progress backup about 1.1gb.
12noon progress backup about 1.1gb
Version 5 installation about 1.2gb
Temp holding/work area another copy 1.2gb
My growth rate is about 26mb per month.

You get the idea get plenty of drive space to play with your database.
I have been happy with the performance with this setup.
Hardware is only half the equation, the database must be tuned also.
