Vantage - Shopfloor terminals - SOLVED

Turns out this is due to crl.verisign.net validating the certificate. Since our MES terminals have internet access blocked the .Net Epicor client can't validate but keeps trying. The following has been added to the mfgsys.exe.config as the first line in the runtime section:

<generatePublisherEvidence enabled="false"/>

We've tested it on several machines and it appears to have solved our issue.

Hi All

Our shopfloor terminals are gradually dying.

Originally they were ex-office PCs which we used.

We are looking to replace a couple of them and were considering some of these
very small form factor units (low budget due to low spec).

At present we have Epicor MES installed on the PC directly.

An option would be to us TS to a server but it starts getting messy for the
users as there are more things to press and more things that can go wrong.

What you you use?

What would you recommend?

Thanks.

Get a thin client, and use it with TS not messy at all and transparent to
the user.

How do you configure the think client to connect automatically to TS?

Also are their any thin clients that you recommend?

I assume the spec wouldnt need to be as great as a normal PC?

What OS?

Thanks.

You can put the shortcut RDP in the Windows Startup folder so it
automatically loads TS upon Win Login. We use HP thin clients and they
work great.

We also have a few of the small-form-factor touchscreen PC's that run
the full MES client (www.pioneerpos.com <http://www.pioneerpos.com/> ).

They both have their benefits, but the thin client is a good way to go.

you can pick up some used WYSE thin clients. I think the old ones can be had
for around $100 each. they are configurable to connect to a TS
automatically.

We have about 30 Thin client users here. They dont notice much of a
difference for the simple tasks.

We have some older Neoware thin clients that we use. Work great for that
application. I have the connection startup automatically when they turn the
thin client on.

Instead of giving full Remote Desktop, has anyone made Epicor/Vantage
a TS-Remote Application on Server 2008? For an example, see:

We use wireless throughout the site - how do these thin clients work with
wireless?

You'll have to look around, but they do make wireless thin clients.

WYSE terminals on a Terminal Server are one of the more popular terminals I
have seen used.

I am not sure which model specifically they have used, but they find them
good for shop floors for a few reasons.

1- Smaller, don't take up as much space and can be mounted to an LCD
monitor.
2- Power, they use a lot less than a full PC
3- Almost no moving parts and smaller airflow openings, less damage can be
done to them than a full PC from air based dust etc on the shop floor.
4- Cost, depending on how many and what kind of deal you can get, they cost
between $400-600 compared to more expensive desktops.
5- Management is on the TS, reduces what an employee can do to mess up the
OS and reduces "update" problems.

We've been buying off-lease Dell desktop systems for around $400 from
Systime, and now a local company selling from the same channel. We get
a full PC (which has its ups and downs), but in our shop floor
environment this means we can deal with a variety of USB and GPIB cards
for various test instruments, etc. and have a standard system pretty
much identical to the majority of end-user systems out there.

Yeah they're running XP, but even with support ending for XP in 2014
they're still a good deal, and at that point who knows what kind of
client terminal we might want to gradually replace them with.

We bought a cheap server for our terminal server. We evaluated WYSE clients but found the HPs were better priced. The HPs also come with free software to manage them all remotely, including imaging on the fly. Once you get one configured properly, you can also back its configuration up to a flash drive, pop in another one, and restore it. All you have to do then is change the unit's name or customize the RDP ID and/or password if you desire.

Check out the HP t5325 clients. They ran $180 each when we bought them. I think I set them up with the kiosk mode, which gave the users no local things to click. When you turn them on, they immediately load the RDP client to the terminal server. If there's a power outage or interruption, the MES portion continues on the terminal server and the thin clients simply resume the RDP connection when it comes back online. They work great. Haven't had a problem with them and been running for a year now.

They also offer a wireless adapter that can be plugged in to the USB port but we haven't tested it.

We've picked up an Acer with Linux Lincup (or similar) OS running on it.

What's our best approach to get it to go straight to RDP or TS Client and load
up so the user has no control over the Thin Client software so to them they
literally turn the client on and it looks like they are logging or (or logged
on) to windows / MES?

Thanks.

How do you all lock down your server so when the clients TS to it they have no
permissions to write to e.g. the C drive etc?

Thanks,

Get a thin client, and use it with TS not messy at all and transparent to

GPO is the way to go. Microsoft has a nice document that lists all the TS
relevant settings.

We used GPO on the TS but even locked it down further by setting a bogus DNS IP to prevent any web surfing. There are a lot of workarounds to getting a web browser to open.

Force IE to use a bad proxy instead. No browsing, without all the annoyance
of broken DNS.
There are also simple tools available to do process blacklisting.

Is there any way to get a thin client (that is connected to a server via
terminal services) to log off or shut down when Epicor MES is exited?

Â
We bought a cheap server for our terminal server. We evaluated WYSE clients but
found the HPs were better priced. The HPs also come with free software to manage
them all remotely, including imaging on the fly. Once you get one configured
properly, you can also back its configuration up to a flash drive, pop in
another one, and restore it. All you have to do then is change the unit's name
or customize the RDP ID and/or password if you desire.

Check out the HP t5325 clients. They ran $180 each when we bought them. I think
I set them up with the kiosk mode, which gave the users no local things to
click. When you turn them on, they immediately load the RDP client to the
terminal server. If there's a power outage or interruption, the MES portion
continues on the terminal server and the thin clients simply resume the RDP
connection when it comes back online. They work great. Haven't had a problem
with them and been running for a year now.

They also offer a wireless adapter that can be plugged in to the USB port but we
haven't tested it.
