Vantage System Assessment

Can you give us a couple of examples of what the consultant recommended that
your management did not like?

We have been on Vantage about 8 years. About 3 years ago we had system
assessment completed. It took several days and was done by a Vanatge
consultant. He returned to review his findings several weeks later. It was
an eye opener, not only with the way we were or weren't using Vantage, but
with our operations. The biggest problem we had though was management
cooperation. Management approved the consultant reviewing the system, but
didn't like what they heard. So, as a consequence, none, I mean 0, of his
suggestions were implemented.

You must have management backing you or, as our case, just a big waste of
$$.

Subject: [Vantage] Vantage System Assessment

We are looking at the possibility of having a Vantage System Assessment done
and I was wondering if anyone who has had one has any comments about how it
went and what if anything could have made it better. Dan McCarter would be
the Epicor person performing the assessment. We have been on Vantage for 8
years and are looking to make the move from 5.1 to 6.1 and I thought it a
good time to evaluate what we could be doing better. I am also looking at
starting anew with 6.1 and use the export/import utility to only move over
the history that we really need, thereby cleaning out all of the old useless
data.

I would appreciate any ideas/information that anyone has.

Thanks!

We did this last spring and I felt it was well worth it. We had been up about 2 years but were looking for ways to tweak more value out of Vantage. Our original implementation consultant, Bonnie Stubbs, was available so she had a great head start on the little (or big) peculiarities of our operations. Many of the suggestions we expected (like not using WIP for finished inventory thus keeping jobs open for many months) but some were little optimizations we had missed that saved a lot of time. A fair amount of our interest involved getting the scoop on other modules from someone good with the user side rather than from Sales (sorry Brian) and could relate to how we use Vantage. Plan on several days and having all the relevant people available to answer questions and show how they are doing things now. Then they will go away and write the report with the detailed recommendations.

With all the different features that can be missed or forgotten and all the little ways things can be done more efficiently I think spending the time to get a fresh set of eyeballs on the processes and usage really does pay back the cost. Something that might be good to do like we did a couple years after startup then again every 3-4 years as a tune-up. If you start new then definitely get ans assesment with a focus on things like optimizing coding structures, reason codes, etc... One downside to this though might be having to rewrite a lot of reports (new filters etc...).

Things happen during the implementation; like not listening to the consultant, stubborn management with its own ideas and general chaos along the learning curve. Also really bad habits, in our case, carried over from DCD-Classic. Then there were the several modules we never got around to implementing at the start and tackled on our own after Bonnie was gone. Finally, we implemented at 4.0 and had the assesment at 5.20 and there were a lot of changes in between that had features we either were not aware of or were not using to our best advantage. Having Bonnie back gave us an impartial viewpoint by someone already familiar with our little quirks from the original implementation.

Just out of curiousity, approximately how much does something like this cost? We are still on 3.0 and happy enough with it but there is so much more we should be doing and I'm thinking when we jump to 6 having something like this done.

We used the last of the old service credits from our original implementation so I am not sure how it would be valued in straight out dollars. My gut feeling was it was something over $5,000. You would have to ask your CAM and perhaps also discuss with the consulting people (sort of a seperate group). I know we can point to several specific improvements that should pay that back (even it if wasn't cash for us) relatively quickly (under a year).

One hitch is that Epicor has been so successful at selling new sites that the consultants are booked up much of the time so they may need to be scheduled well in advance.

Does anyone out there have a progress program or can help us write a program
to do the following? We want to unapprove all our revision levels on all
our parts in the part master. Rather than have someone sit and go through
each one and unapprove them, we thought we could do some kind of progress
program to go through the database and change them all to unapproved. We
did contact Epicor and they said they would get back to us with a quote but
we have not heard back from them and we are getting anxious to get this
done.

One of the macro programs (Macro Express, Ground Control..;. etc) can do
this easily. I've gone through thousands of records doing similar click
unclick operations.

You must have management backing you or, as our case, just a big waste of
$$.

Thanks!
