I am planning on upgrading from 5.2 to 6.1 and I want to see if this
idea might work.

Is it possible to have 2 computers, one with version 6.0 and one with
version 6.1 setup. Then take the 5.2 database and copy it over to the
first computer with version 6.0.
Run the schema change on our database.

Then take that database and copy over to the second computer with
version 6.1 and run the schema change on it.

Will this idea work to get my database up to version 6.1 or do I need to
go through the normal process?

Any thoughts?
Thanks
Jasper

That is the way we did it. You will also have to login and run the database
conversions on each computer for 6.0 and 6.1. We discovered most of the
converting and schema changing was on version 6.0. The upgrade from 6.0 to
6.1 was quick. We did a probackup and prorestore commands when moving the
database from one server to the other. If you just copy the database you
will have to issue the prostruct repair command...it's quick though.

Since you can use Progress 9.1D to upgrade from 5.1 to 6.1 you can use one PC. Just install Vantage to different directories for each version. You dont have to reinstall Progress at all.
One thing I have found to make it much easier is to replace

ConnectOptions=-N TCP -H vantage -S 6000 -ld MFGSYS

with

ConnectOptions=-1 -i -B 90000

This will start Vantage in single user mode. This way you do not have to setup each database in Progress Expl. It also makes the conversions and schema changes run much faster.

Just a thought,
Jeremy

I'm about to do some test upgrades as well, Jeremy do you then just reverse
the ConnectOptions back to
ConnectOptions=-N TCP -H vantage -S 6000 -ld MFGSYS to put the db back in
multi user mode (live mode) or do you have to do
something else?

Correct, Switch it back (with your perameters instead of mine) and then set up Progress Exp. and you should be good.

Paul,

When you used probackup and prorestore to move the database, how did you handle the the fact that the database name of the 5.2 database is different than the database name of 6.0?

Good question. Basically what you do is make a backup normally on the 5.2
server. Copy this backup the the machine your using for the 6.0 conversion.
Make a folder, name it whatever you like, and restore the 5.2 database
there. Since 5.2, 6.0 and 6.1 use the same progress version your good with
the commands. The name doesn't change at this point.

Pop your Vantage 6.00 CD in and after the autorun kicks select " Upgrade
Database from Existing Installation". This utility will gather all the
information it needs, like where your Mfgsys60 software directory is, which
directory progress is installed, and where your copy of the 5.2 database is
located. In the end you click the "Upgrade Vantage Database" button and
sit back. This took 1 hour 10 minutes on our 4GB database. Then it runs
you through the SchemaChange process and you end up with a new MFGSYS
database sitting there ready to be started.
