Vantage - waiting in line

OK. I already have that much. I have the rudiments of an auto-start-stop batchfile, but it gets hung up sporatically due to the Event Log for some reason. I know other's use a macro editor to automate the process - even to the point of changing the name of the database to TEST, and a date.

There was a thread about all this on the list a few months ago.

Troy,

In talking to Norm it is not automatic. Every night we run the bacvan
utility before we run back up. Then in the morning before the office staff
starts bangning at the keyboards he stops the test data base and runs the
resore utility restore the current db to the test db. The resore utility
source and destination directories are in the batch file.

PS: Norm correct me if I'm wrong! :)

Does it automatically shut down and restart Test Vantage during the process,
and are you using Progress Explorer or Procontol? We use Procontrol and I
have had a hard time getting the batch file to properly shut down and
restart the service.

My side kick, Norm Watkins, has a batch file to do this function. I'll
make
sure he posts it for you.

We do the same thing, except that ours is a week old usually. How do you
update your test database, Wayne? Do you have it automated?

Gary,

We have a 24 hour old copy of our db running along side our live side.
It
is useful for folks that are brousing for info and not entering data.
As
ops manager I use the 24 hour old data quite often. Granted it is not
current but in many cases it is good enough for Horse Shoes and Hand
Grenades.

One of my Vantage users sent me this email message a few minutes ago:

1) Can a queue be set up for access to Vantage so we donÂ’t have to waste so
much time trying to gain access?
2) Is there a way to see who is on Vantage so that wishful users can
ascertain that all logged on users are active?

I don't know. Maybe I'm asking too much, but I think there's a market
opportunity here. We are up against the wall on our licenses. People are
beginning to have to wait to get into Vantage. We're using Mike Podlin's
Timeout utility, and that helped, until the Vantage access and workload
increased significantly recently. The majority of our Vantage users are
active in Vantage all day. And we have about 2 people too many for the
number of licenses we have. So I'm getting an ever-growing number of people
who can't seem to get in. I end up going into ProMon and checking for hung
processes, but generally there are none I could delete to let somebody in.

So my questions are these:

1) How would one go about setting up a queue for being able to login to
Vantage when a license seat becomes available?

2) Can ProMon be set up as read only, so the users could access it from
their workstations, to view Vantage license activity?

3) Can Vantage user activity be monitored / broadcast?

4) Any other suggestions for workarounds on this?

5) Or do I tell them they'll have to spring for a couple of more licenses?

Thanks,

Gary,

I'd also be very interested in utilities along these lines. We are having
the same issues. Checked on license prices - another $8000 for 3 additional
licenses plus the $1750 a year in maintenance (calculated with install
price, not discounted purchase price). That's a lot to sign off on. We
ended up cranking Podlin's timeout utility down to 15 minutes. We haven't
had any complaints about people not being able to get in, but now they are
upset about getting kicked out too early. They do prefer it this way as
opposed to no access to Vantage at all.

I thought the time-out only worked if someone hadn't used Vantage (i.e. no

It would be wise to time full time folks - esp.. those in accounting only if

some problems, though probably only minor annoyances like having partially
entered records.

We use Mike Podlin's utility here as well and we found that the best
approach was to find the users who *really* used Vantage all day. We gave
them a longer timeout of about an hour. The other users who would stay in
Vantage all day didn't really need to, so we turned their timeout to 10 or
15 minutes. In our shop, we probably have about a 50/50 split between these
two types.

People complained at first, but they got used to it. From a cost
justification standpoint, it was a lot less of a timewaster for them to have
to restart Vantage then have an IT person (i.e. me) go through the list of
current users trying to find someone who could be kicked.

We have had a couple of situations in Accounting where the the person opened up a Group, then went to the file cabinet to look up an invoice or something, then got distracted. When they went back they had been kicked out by Mike's Timeout. Later, they went back to the Group which had a number of items in it. The group would never post. Even after moving every item out of the group to another group, it wouldn't post. It took awhile to figure out that the timeout utility was the culprit. Epicor sent instructions to us for killing the orphaned group.

We have cranked up the Timeout time for accounting for that reason. Also, the Progress timeout (and maybe Mike's too) utility does not look at mouse activity, it looks at Progress inquiries (or maybe windows opening/closing), so you could even be working on your computer and moving your mouse and have Vantage in the background and you might get kicked out of Vantage.

It's something to specifically watch in the accounting area. We haven't had problems in other areas, however.

Helpful info, Troy. I've cranked up Accounting to 800 min. Most at 15 min.
Some heavy users at 60 min. Can't do much more than that.

Gary,

We have a 24 hour old copy of our db running along side our live side. It
is useful for folks that are brousing for info and not entering data. As
ops manager I use the 24 hour old data quite often. Granted it is not
current but in many cases it is good enough for Horse Shoes and Hand
Grenades.

Gary,

We have a 24 hour old copy of our db running along side our live side. It
is useful for folks that are brousing for info and not entering data. As
ops manager I use the 24 hour old data quite often. Granted it is not
current but in many cases it is good enough for Horse Shoes and Hand
Grenades.

It would be wise to time full time folks - esp.. those in accounting only if
absolutely necessary. A time out in the middle of a transaction could pose
some problems, though probably only minor annoyances like having partially
entered records.

Chris, Brian,

Right now I have most people cranked down to 30 min. But I guess it's
back-against-the-wall-time - I'll squeeze the Timeout down to 15 min. It
seems to be working for you guys. Thanks. -Gary

Does it automatically shut down and restart Test Vantage during the process, and are you using Progress Explorer or Procontol? We use Procontrol and I have had a hard time getting the batch file to properly shut down and restart the service.

Wayne

PS: Norm correct me if I'm wrong! :)
