We use the multi-currency module in our Singapore facility. For the most part it works ok.

We have the base currency set up as U.S. dollars so all reports, burden rates, labor rates, etc. must be entered as U.S. dollars. All reports (the aging reports are an exception) show base currency only. Flexibility to run reports and to enter costing information in the native currency would be a nice feature.

The only problems of which I'm aware are a timing issue when a receipt is entered in one period, revaluation is performed, then an invoice for the receipt is entered in the next period. It will leave a balance in the Received but not Invoiced account. Causes them fits in Asia as they try to reconcile the account.

Also, the inability to run financial statements in the 'native' currency for the auditors in Singapore forces them to download the financial statements to Excel then manipulate the data there. It seems like it would be simple enough to add an option to the financial reports program to be able to print in a different currency. But, I think that the main problem is that unlike the subledgers, the GL tables only store financial data in the base currency.

Would anyone using the currency module care to comment on how well it works
and if you would recommend its use. We are finding ourselves doing more
multi currency transactions and are hoping this will help. We are on Version
5.10.135.

Mike,

The reason for this is primarly from a North American GAAP mindset
where statements have to be in base currency. The idea behind the MC
module is really to provide the capability to run transactions and
the associated sub-ledgers in source currency and have everything
auto-calc bac to base. It really isn't intended to provide multiple
base currency calcualtion capability. The coding and table structure
required for that is pretty extreme. If your asain location is
required to provide statements and such in their currency, ahve you
considered going to the multi-site module and running that as an
independent company with a dependent ledger to the primary company?
