Ver 6.1 New Install

Thanks for all the suggestions. It is up and running (mostly) now. As
always it turned out to be a number of things together so I really
appreciate all of the help.

Mitchell....the other suggestions are good. I just went through the new
server wringer last December. If possible one of the first things to try
would be a clean install of Vantage on a new or freshly scrubbed PC that has
zero traces of Vantage on the old server. If that works OK then as Patrick
suggested deeply clean references to the old server from a PC that won't
connect. Also remove from the HOSTS and SERVICES files. One other thing I
learned was that uninstalling the client (required, was this done?) does not
alway run correctly if there are drive mappings to the new server already
setup....especially if the same letter (like M: or V:) was used. Map to the
older server, uninstall Progress Client, map to the new server then install
Progress client. Even this does not remove all traces from the registry so
in between (be fore reinstalling Progress) I had to manually scan the
registry and search for all references to Progress, old server name. old
mapped drive letters, Vantage....and anythign else remotely related (like
mfgsys61 or Epicor too). Delete them all...there are hundreds of references.
Then install Progress client.

It also helps to have the old server either turned off (at least for testing
if you can) or set access rights to Epicor and Progress folders to not
shared if you can.

As mentioned in a couple other posts I also revealed some network issues
that affect the startup that I never had before. The login screen would
eventually come up but would take 3-4 minutes. Examining network utilization
(on XP via Task Manager) showed max of 2% utilization and the regocx.log (in
local user work folder...mfgwrk61) time stamps showed excessive time spent
checking DLL and OCX files due to slow network speed. The only thing that
has worked so far is to connect via a newer, managed, switch.

Another tip if you don't do it already...clicking on the splash screen makes
it go away and obtains login screen much faster...always.

There is an excellent document in the EpicWeb knowledgebase with things to
try when login fails or is very slow. Unfortuneately it is not 100% but they
are still good things to look at.

I have 6.1 running on a new server. I can connect from the server so the
database is up and running ok after being restored from backup. The client
installs from a work station normally. When you click the icon to run
Vantage you get a splash screen but Vantage never loads. Any ideas?

Mitchell Kirby

Mr. Mitchell: You could try loading the client on the server and see
if it runs from there.

Also, you may want to take a quick peek at your Vantage.MFG startup
file to make sure the server and paths look correct. This is usually
located from your server share v:\mfgsys61\Vantage.mfg. Make sure
your ConnectOptions line looks something like this:
ConnectOptions=-N TCP -H <yourservername> -S 6100 -ld MFGSYS

Good Luck

Search the registry on the client for the old server name and see what
you get.

Mitchell,

You may want to search the registry in the client and change all
references to the old server to the new server.

Mario.
