I schedule for 8 resources...seems like not very many..I know.
APS gives me the ability to establish capabilities, and in turn, create memberships (greater than the 1-to-1 relationship between resource and group for scheduling) between the resources and the capability requirements.
This can really come in handy with a "floating" labor pool. That is, I do not have to schedule to specific resources and determine their availability. I simply schedule the requirement I need to do the operation...ie, skilled labor or non-skilled labor. The same resource can have a relationship to both capabilities.
So, I have "WORKER1", who can do both skilled and non-skilled capability requirements, and under the setup for the capabilities, I can set load priorities.
So, since I do not want to waste my skilled resource on basic non-skilled work, in the non-skill capability I set worker1 load precedence to last, and in the skilled capability, I set worker1 load priority to first...therefore, the system will schedule worker1 for non-skilled only if there is no other available resource, and it will do it when he is not tied to other work on another operation at that time. It is at this point that you can also include job priorities.
I have not been able to achieve a lot of happiness with material constraints because of the low reliability of my vendors. Therefore, even if I schedule based on material constraints, I still have to adjust because the parts never seem to get here. But, in this case, we replan telling the system to ignore the constraints and just make the necessary adjustments.

Subject: [Vantage] Re: Version 8.03 Scheduler
Carey,
Thanks for replying I have a few questions as we haven't yey got a
working version of *.03 up and running yet!
How many Resources are you scheduling for and how many jobs do you
have on your schedule. We currently schedule our resources by
individuals and their skill sets. Do you do something similar?
Do you prioritize your jobs and are you ranking your resources?
Do you find material constraints work as you thought.
Does the ssheduler dates remain fairly consistant day to day.
Grateful for any information on the above and thanks for your time.

scheduler. Weare about to upgrade to Vers 8.03 and hope to use the
now integratedAPS scheduler.Does anybody have any experience of using
the scheduler in 8.03 in amulti-resource environment using material
constraints with Multi-levelBOMs.Any problems, is the schedule
stable, does it crash? ( the externalAPS module in 6.0 is a little
flaky)Any experience gratefully received.Pete
