Good Morning.

Has anyone seen the virus that when it comes up a clock comes on and
counts down - saying your computer will shut off in 30 seconds. Then it
shut downs your computer?

My boss received this on his machine as well as another person. Both
say they did not open anything but..... Neither computer that this
happened to is on sight.

I looked on mcafee web page but I did not see anything.

There is a rapidly spreading virus that hit yesterday about 3:00 pm.
It's intent is to launch a DOS attack on the Microsoft update website.
Your virus seems to have those symptoms. It's using the recently
uncovered Microflaws buffer overflow attack. The virus takes over your
system and forces it to participate in the attack. It's been dubbed
LovSan and includes taunts to Bill Gates. The flaw affects all of
Microflaws products. Though there are reported "fixes" (flaw
enhancements?) on the Windows Update website. If you can still go
there. Update your virus protection and scan scan scan.

Then you need to get a rescue disc set up with your virus package and
floppy boot from that disc. Also, you can yank the harddrive and slave
it to a system that has current virus protection. Also try going into
safe mode to see if it will prevent the virus from starting.

But making it a slave on on computer with virus protection maybe the

Thanks Shirley. I doubt he has a rescue disc with the virus package.
But making it a slave on on computer with virus protection maybe the
answer.

Thanks.

Then you need to get a rescue disc set up with your virus package and
floppy boot from that disc. Also, you can yank the harddrive and slave
it to a system that has current virus protection. Also try going into
safe mode to see if it will prevent the virus from starting.

Unfortunately, as soon as he boots up his computer and logs on a clock
appears - counts down and shut down. I can not do a windows update.

There is a rapidly spreading virus that hit yesterday about 3:00 pm.
It's intent is to launch a DOS attack on the Microsoft update website.
Your virus seems to have those symptoms. It's using the recently
uncovered Microflaws buffer overflow attack. The virus takes over your
system and forces it to participate in the attack. It's been dubbed
LovSan and includes taunts to Bill Gates. The flaw affects all of
Microflaws products. Though there are reported "fixes" (flaw
enhancements?) on the Windows Update website. If you can still go
there. Update your virus protection and scan scan scan.

Yes, I have and actually as of last night I have been concerned that this
"error" is actually a virus of some sort. I have NEVER seen anything like
this before, and its becoming somewhat annoying and more frequent. The first
time I ever noticed it was on my own computer at home, usually happens when
I play an mpeg in Windows Media Player.

The second time I heard of this "error" was with one of my friends who I
know for a fact doesn't download random things onto his computer.

The third time was a associate at my work where this was happening with his
home computer.

All three machines funny enough are Windows XP SP1, but I don't understand
with that since the entire time of using Windows XP myself on multiple
computers, I have never ran into this "error" until recently (within the
last two weeks).

Any further information regarding this "error" would definitely be helpful.
I'll also pass along anything that turns up from my investigation here.

If I'm reading the related web sites correctly this is not distributed as payload in an email, rather it is a TCP port vulnerability. Correct? I am reluctant to inflict yet another virus (worm) warning on my users if there is actually nothing they can do about it anyway. I have our firewall set so that all ports are closed except the ones I explicitly have opened so I think (please correct me if wrong) I am covered. Plus the latest live update from Symantec.

Anyone care to reassure me or else scare the daylight out of me?

Thanks,

Todd,

This may help - I saw this on the link that Dan gave us in a previous
email. Sorry I could not be anymore of an assitance.

Payload

If the day of the month is 16 or later, or the month is between January
and August, the worm creates a working thread to send random data to
windowsupdate.com almost continuously. This effectively launches a
Distributed Denial of <http://www3.ca.com/virusinfo/glossary.aspx#DDoS>
Service attack against windowsupdate.com.

Todd,
I am not one to jump on all, and any updates that come out. But this is one
I put on my servers last week, as a precaution. I also put it on some of my
major PC's. The patch went on okay and I haven't had any problems (knock on
wood). I put it on because I didn't want to deal with cleaning up a server,
and I didn't want to explain to my boss why I didn't put it on.

If you read down Window 95 and 98 PC's don't need the patch.
Just my 2cents.
Nancy

I received a question from our AP person.... is there was a way to write a check in payables without creating a new vendor. If you have a one time check you need to write and you knew you wouldn't need that vendor again, how do you do it?

Thanks in advance

Subject: [Vantage] Question about AP

I received a question from our AP person.... is there was a way to write a
check in payables without creating a new vendor. If you have a one time
check you need to write and you knew you wouldn't need that vendor again,
how do you do it?

Thanks in advance

Stephanie

Yes - just go right into payment entry and add a payment. You will add the
vendor information directly on the screen instead of choosing one - then pay
misc to add the amount and a note.

Stephanie,
After the AP person sets up their group under payment entry, you go under
payment, and add, just like you normally would. Instead of using the drop
down box to select a vendor, just tab down below where it asks for name and
address and start typing what you need for your one time vendor.
