VPN or RDP? Blank Title 140740

<AppServerURL value="net.tcp://MYPUBLIC.DNS/AppServer" />

That would work, you just have to make sure that you udpate that "deployment" when you change the main server.

Hello, everybody:

We will soon host a server on a connection that runs 10Mbps up and 50Mpbs down.  Another remote site plans on connecting also using 10/50Mbps.

I would like to setup a VPN between the two sites, but afraid that with a potential of 75 remote users. this connection will be too slow for a VPN.

What if we use an RDP connection to the server?  This would require another Windows 2012R2 license plus additional license for each client that connects to the server, which is cost that hasn't been included in my original proposal, so I'm trying to avoid going this route.

Thanks for any feedback!

Are you on E10?
What about pushing Epicor over the WAN? HTTPS ?

Okay, so Epicor's FAT client would connect over SSL to the Epicor hosting server?  What about the initial client install?

It sounds like you are familiar with this setup, may I ask what the bandwidth is from the client over WAN to the Server?

When you say HTTP, I immediately think of their EWA.

Thanks Jose!
I just did this setup recently, the initial client install is a bit tricky. Although Epicor does allow for HTTP / FTP deployment the initial setup.exe doesn't recognize that as an option. What we ended up doing was packaging up the smallest possible client basically the exe and the auto updater plus the config and shipped that in a custom setup package so that when you launch Epicor it knows to go to the HTTP / FTP site and download the rest. Initial client deployment is a bit slow and obviously has to do with the bandwidth.
I am not certain what the bandwidth between host / site are I'll see if I can figure it out

Jose,

Would you say the result at the remote location is similar to RDP or local connection?  How many users are remotely connecting using this method?  Does Epicor have this method documented is it similar to what they use for their customers to access their hosted cloud?

The RDP solution would be ideal, but I did not spec out the licenses required or the additional hardware, which might come as a shock since it wasn't included in the original quote.

Thanks again!

Hi,

Unless you have a private connection between sites, I would advise still to wrap the rdp session in some sort of vpn / tunnel for security reasons.

Epicor uses Net.Tcp Transport Security and brings up a TLS tunnel between the Client and End-Point Server. There is no practical difference between this TLS Tunnel and a VPN Tunnel (since most VPN is TLS anyways). Adding a VPN wrapper will add a small but significant overhead.
You could argue that someone knowing that there is an Epicor Server on the other end could get a hold of an Epicor client and configuration and then attempt to brute force their way in into the client. This could be mitigated to some extent by requiring by a VPN but it does add the VPN overhead. You could also restrict on your host provider side to only allow incoming traffic from YOUR company's IP range without the need for a VPN.
Again VPN does add an additional layer of security, but Epicor by itself already does TLS and the communication is encrypted

If you are going the RDP Route the same as above applies, RDP uses Windows CredSSP and your choice of Kerberos or TLS for authentication and Encryption and once again VPN doesn't add that much more security.

In my experience if you plan on running Epicor over the connection it would be better to RDP.
While I have not done extensive testing with E10 on remote connections E9 and below do not play well with any latency in the data stream.

You are also going to have to look at the amount of traffic that is utilized by a RDP connection to make sure your pipe can handle that many RDP sessions simultaneously. Microsoft has it published I just don't have it handy to share.

Jose,

What path do you have set for your AppServerURL for the FAT WAN clients?   What about running the Windows install and setting up a deployment server that is on site for purposes of speed?

So we would move the large client install directory to a machine local and copy updates to this machine too.  Would be work?

Thanks for the help.
