What are the purposes of a Warehouse Zone?

I read some things in the manual, but I figured I’d just ask this openly and not try to influence your thoughts.

We use zones to separate stock in to pickable stock and bulk stock locations. When we use fulfilment workbench we only allow allocation in the pick zone. The pickers can only reach the lowest locations and we want them to pick from there only. The stock in the bulk locations which are usually higher and on pallets can only be access by forklift trucks and in the UK these trucks can only be driven by those qualified to do so. So zones helps us manage this. We have reports for the stock control team that tell them when stock in the pick location is running low and they need to go replenish it from bulk

That’s brilliant - I was not thinking of zoning vertically. I tend to think in (2D) floor plans.

So to you, or anyone, do zones help with “putting away”?

That might be clear, but to spell it out:

  • PO receipt of seats to REC bin
  • Seats are bulk stored in the C03 zone
  • Some kind of indication (Mtl Queue?) that the seats should be moved to the C03 zone; any shelf in the zone is fine

I’m thinking no, but I like being wrong.

What kind of mtl queue requests would you generate. I don’t think you can specify zone out of the box.

Right, I didn’t think so either. Just curious what the uses are in… use.

We use the ‘Warehouse Replenishment’ settings and Kanban Monitor to manage the restocking of specific areas.

No, doesn’t really add much to the put away process and I don’t think you can directly see zone information in receipts or movements as standard but obviously gives you something to use in customizations if needed

We’ve used zones to sort/print inventory count tags with not usually the official cycle counting within the system.

We also have an Offsite zone setup for raw material we own but the supplier keeps on hand at their location. Suppliers draw down that inventory with subcontract operations. We end up having to manually issue the material since you can’t backflush material related to a subcontract. Each supplier has a separate bin within the offsite zone - so we can easily pull offsite zone, part bin extract and send out for validation via manual cycle count.

Cool ideas, thank you!
