Thanks for the help. I have no clue what happened. It did clear up. I had
to reboot both servers but everything seems to be back to normal. I
finished installing the service pack on the backup server and rebooted both
machines.
We have 2 Win2K servers, 12 PC's in the office (98se, 2000, XP) and 8 data
collection PC's (98se) in the shop. I seem to have inherited the job of sys
admin. Things like setting up terminal services and VPN's seem to drag on
forever and never work quite right.
Can anyone recommend a good reference book, class, web site for the novice
system administrator? I attended a training class last year that was mostly
theory despite being told it was mostly hands on. It turned into an intro
class toward certification and the instructor spent a lot of time explaining
how to pass the test. I could care less about being certified. I want to
know the right way to set up things like permissions, print services, VPN's,
terminal services, active directory and all of the other BS it takes to run
the data processing of a small company.
Frustrated,
Mitchell Kirby

All it does is launch the "Users and Passwords" Control Panel program.
Control.exe - <some control panel command you want executed>
Options are:
Desktop - "Desktop"
Color - Same as Desktop but with "Appearance" tab selected
Date/time - "Date and Time"
International - "Regional Settings"
Mouse - "Mouse"
Keyboard - "Keyboard"
Folders - "Folder Settings" Control Panel
Netware - "Novell NetWare" Control Panel
Telephony - "Phone and Modem Options"
Admintools - "Administrative Tools"
Schedtasks - "Scheduled Tasks"
Netconnections - "Network and Dial-Up Connections"
Infrared - "Infrared Control Panel"
I doubt this is related to your problem...

Ok, I'll bite what was this supposed to do? I ran this from a command
prompt. It didn't seem to do anything. However, my users began to complain
of slow responses to the point where I rebooted the server once everybody
left for the day. The system is still very slow and my other server is also
acting funny.
The other server runs my test database of vantage and most of the print
services. When you click on settings; printers it hangs. When you click on
settings:control panel it hangs. Rebooting doesn't help. I'm not saying it
is related since I was also updating the service pack on the OS.
Looks like a long weekend ahead.
