Windows 2003 CALs

If you have SBS the licensing for network sharing is NOT needed....

There is a phone number you can call Microsoft and ask about these
different scenarios..I just remember it off hand.

You may need to purchase Windows CALs (which are different from TS CALs)
if you do not have enough to cover your current user base. Windows CALs
are required for any users that connect to the server using Windows
technologies (i.e. Network Sharing in your case). However, these CALs
are purchased per network, not server so if you have 10 servers and 100
users you only need 100 CALs and not 1,000 (100 CALs per each one of the
10 servers).

Let me know if this makes sense.

Do I need to purchase additional CALs for my new server? The server
is strictly used for Vantage 6.10, and we don't do any terminal
services except for an occasional log on through remote desktop.

Thanks!
Ben
From what I have always understood...and anyone who can also shed light
on this as well speak up, the CALS are needed on your domain controller
(the server that authenticates the user to the network). Since Vantage
is a MEMBER SERVER, you should not have to get additional CALS, just the
5 that come with the operating system.

I should say in addition to that...if you were to use a terminal server,
you would have to get the CALS, but only for the number of sessions you
will have on the terminal server.

Hope that makes some sense....

One note on this: make sure you set use server license mode to Per User and not Per server otherwise you would need those 1000 license.
