Windows Vista Business & Vantage 6.1

I chose to use Citrix sessions for the couple Vista stations we have.
You could use Terminal services as well. The beauty of a published app
through Citrix is that it looks and feels like the user is working
locally.

I am running it on several machines for about two months now and the
only issue so far has been that I cannot get it to collate.

I have people in several different departments using it.

Shipping (mostly creating Packing Slips)

Job Engineering (mostly Job Entry and Part Master)

Sales Support (SO, PO and Customer Entry)

Purchasing (PO Entry)

Hope this helps.

Hi Richard

Just wondering how you got on with Vantage 6.1 and Windows Vista
Business. Starting to find it more difficult to buy XP machines and
after speaking with Epicor support got a bit of a shock to be told it
is not supported and probably never will be!

Did you get Vantage 6.1 working ok on Vista and has there been any
paticular issues you have come a across.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Our design department have just unilaterally purchased a new PC loaded with
Windows Vista Business.
A slight problem in that (apparently) this is not compatible with Vantage
6.1 due to Progress 9.1d not being compatible.
The question is, Does the team think there is there a way around this (e.g
disk partition with XP and Vantage/Progress loaded there) ?
All and any ideas/suggestions gratefully received

A separate disk partition will work but virtual PC would be better as you can launch it from within your Vista session.

I agree with Gerald. Virtual PC is the best right now. Are you running
the 64-bit Windows Vista or 32-bit? If it is the 64-bit, you may try
installing the 32-bit if you have it, if not, then VPC is the best way
for now.

Jason, Thanks for the confirmation.

For the record, VPC seems to work fine with 6.1/9.1d. Obviously there's a
licence consideration but in terms of operability, performance etc, it's a
goer.

Page 11 of the Progress Product Availability Guide specifies that 9.1E, 10,
10.1 support XP and 2003 64 (no mention of Vista) but "are not optimized for
64 bit operating system or hardware"

http://www.progress.com/progress_software/products/docs/bu_sep/pavail.pdf

Windows has been a relatively late bloomer to the 64 bit OS market so it's
hardly a surprise that the current offerings would not be optimized for the
environment so, yes, you are right that 10.1b would be the best answer for
those with a need to support a Windows 64 bit Vantage deployment.

Gerald, Thanks for the pointer to VPC.
Jason, Thanks for the confirmation.

For the record, VPC seems to work fine with 6.1/9.1d. Obviously there's
a
licence consideration but in terms of operability, performance etc, it's
a
goer.

I agree with Gerald. Virtual PC is the best right now. Are you running
the 64-bit Windows Vista or 32-bit? If it is the 64-bit, you may try
installing the 32-bit if you have it, if not, then VPC is the best way
for now.

Is Vantage 8 optimized for a 64 bit environment? That is, will
upgrading the hardware and OS to 64 bit rectify some of the performance
issues I've heard about for the last couple of years?

Page 11 of the Progress Product Availability Guide specifies that 9.1E,
10,
10.1 support XP and 2003 64 (no mention of Vista) but "are not optimized
for
64 bit operating system or hardware"

Windows has been a relatively late bloomer to the 64 bit OS market so
it's
hardly a surprise that the current offerings would not be optimized for
the
environment so, yes, you are right that 10.1b would be the best answer
for
those with a need to support a Windows 64 bit Vantage deployment.

Progress/OpenEdge will NOT support Windows 64-bit edition until release
10.1b - which for Vantage 6.x users doesn't really help...but for V8
users it should be due out with the .400 release due out in August.

I guess it must be a 64 issue.
We've got Vista Business 64.
When I tried to run the Vantage Client install, got a "this version of
the
file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running"
message.
Called support who then informed me that 9.1d was not authenticated vs
Vista
and that only v.8 onwards would run on Vista. (at no point did they ask
which version of Vista!)

You've got me thinking now.
Are there any 64bit Vista users who ARE operating 6.1/9.1d out there?

I run Vantage 3.00 and Vantage 8.03 on my Vista Business laptop. I don't
have any issues at all. I also write crystal reports on the laptop also.
You can still buy XP machines through Dell. I think up until next January,
somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

I am running it on several machines for about two months now and the
only issue so far has been that I cannot get it to collate.

I have people in several different departments using it.

Shipping (mostly creating Packing Slips)

Job Engineering (mostly Job Entry and Part Master)

Sales Support (SO, PO and Customer Entry)

Purchasing (PO Entry)

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Hi Richard,
On the Vista 32 bit version, Vantage 6.1 seems to work just fine with no
(extra!) problems than on an XP or 98 machine.
We've got a mix of 98, XP, Vista 32 and just the one Vista 64 bit machine
(and likely to remain so, at least for the foreseeable) and have had to set
up a VirtualPC envionment on that machine to allow the user to run Vantage.
It's not an ideal solution given that it consumes another licence but it's
reasonably robust once the user gets familiar with the operation of the
virtual environment.

Whether or not running 6.1 on Vista32 will allow Epicor to throw up their
hands in horror and give them an excuse to disown any software bugs remains
to be seen.........................

Please contact me offline if I can be of any further assistance.
HTH

Richard
